It isn’t everyday that you hear The Wallflowers played in a bar these days, but let me tell you, I saw these guys at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee a million years ago and they blew the roof off of that place.

I missed the White Sox/Guardians game because I was watching my 9 y/o strike out three batters in his first game pitching, and let me tell you, it was the best baseball game I’ve ever been to.

It’s 2026, and there are still millionaire artists out there justifying why they just couldn’t bring themselves to vote Dem in 2024. Still equivocating between “corporate Dems” and the man trying to destroy our democracy. The smug is frankly offensive.

It is always frustrating to read an otherwise well-written work published by a major academic press, studded with typos and grammatical errors. It does the press little credit.

And here is when the wheels come off. This is “I’m about to fire your ass” Abe Lincoln.
My dear Sir: You remember my speaking to you of what I called your over-cautiousness.
Are you not over-cautious when you assume that you cannot do what the enemy is constantly doing? Should you not claim to be at least his equal in prowess, and act upon the claim? As I understand, you telegraphed General Halleck that you cannot subsist your army at Winchester unless the railroad from Harper's Ferry to that point be put in working order. But the enemy does now subsist his army at Winchester, at a distance nearly twice as great from railroad transportation as you would have to do without the railroad last named. He now wagons from Culpeper Court House, which is just about twice as far as you would have to do from Harper's Ferry. He is certainly not more than half as well provided with wagons as you are. I certainly should be pleased for you to have the advantage of the railroad from Harper's Ferry to Winchester, but it wastes all the remainder of autumn to give it to you, and in fact ignores the question of time, which cannot and must not be ignored. Again, one of the standard maxims of war, as you know, is to "operate upon the enemy's communications as much as possible without exposing your own." You seem to act as if this applies against you, but cannot apply in your favor.
Change positions with the enemy, and think you not he would break your communication with Richmond within the next twenty-four hours? You dread his going into Pennsylvania; but if he does so in full force, he gives up his communications to you absolutely, and you have nothing to do but to follow and ruin him. If he does so with less than full force, fall upon and beat what is left behind all the easier. Exclusive of the water-line, you are now nearer Richmond than the enemy is by the route that you can and he must take. Why can you not reach there before him, unless you admit that he is more than your equal on a march? His route is the are of a circle, while yours is the chord. The roads are as g…

Now, this is how you artfully bitch out someone.
And once more let me tell you, it is indispensable to you that you strike a blow. I am powerless to help this. You will do me the justice to remember l always insisted, that going down the Bay in search of a field, instead of fighting at or near Mannassas, was only shifting, and not surmounting, a difficulty - that we would find the same enemy, and the same, or equal, intrenchments, at either place. The country will not fail to note - is now noting - that the present hesitation to move upon an entrenched enemy, is but the story of Manassas repeated.
I beg to assure you that I have never written you, or spoken to you, in greater kindness of feeling than now, nor with a fuller purpose to sustain you, so far as in my most anxious judgment, I consistently can. But you must act. Yours very truly

#OTD in 1862 one of the most bizarre episodes in American military history played out in the lobby of the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. During a heated argument between generals Jefferson C. Davis and William Nelson, Davis obtained a pistol and mortally wounded Nelson.

Jackson was actually a fairly unimaginative tactician who had the distressing habit of sending units into battle piecemeal. His poor performance during the Seven Days was enough to make Lee question his value, and he never enjoyed with the trust with his boss that Longstreet did.

Two weeks before the fall of Vicksburg, U. S. Grant relieved the commander of his XIII Corps after a fit of pique from John A. McClernand that ranks among the more amusing anecdotes of the war. Once one of Grant’s able lieutenants, he had become something of a nemesis of Grant’s by 1863.

One reason that commanders like McClellan placed such a limited value on their mounted arm was because consensus held that it took two years to make a serviceable cavalryman. They were relegated to serving as messengers and guarding wagon trains and dispersed throughout the army in penny packets.

I may have said this before, but a dramatization of Catton’s A Stillness at Appomattox would land hard. The southern roles must all be played by English actors. For one, they do a more convincing accent than Yankees. Also, the southern elite sounded much like the English elite when they spoke.
