“Education should be about exploration,” the letter reads. “We want to go to school to connect with people, discover things, and learn....We can’t now, because of the rigidity of the new lesson plans and rules makes it almost impossible to explore new ideas...”

Isn’t is obvious that, posthaste, we need to rename all schools, colleges and universities “brain gyms”?

Grateful to the team at @studiosity.com for inviting me on their podcast with Judyth Sachs to talk about why I think human writing matters. Here's something I said that I think gets at what humans can do that chatbots can't --and why teachers and writing centers matter more than ever.
And this thing is that often what really will sort of light the fire under a student is when you help them figure out not how to do something with what's ont he page, but how to find the thing that's not yet on the page. That's what we're doing.

corporate-speak grates so much because language is supposed to be expressive, a way for us to communicate information, whereas the sole purpose of corporate-speak is to create the illusion of information without the substance or to outright conceal meaning. it is an abomination

A consistently pernicious framing of student experience is that they are not in the “real world” yet, as if the debt they’re accruing and incessant punitive surveillance of their labor and speech isn’t entirely of a piece with the broader cultural moment.

Statistical power has been lionized in metascience. First, you care about statistical power only bec your whole scientific vision relies on the results of a hypothesis test. Get over it. Second, power can never make up for poor design, lack of theoretical understanding, or biased samples/measures.

The push for abstraction, datafication, that there's some pure truth that's unpolluted by reality, it just seems like willful ignorance at this point. The idea that you're going to abstract out everything that doesn't lead to a model that confirms what you want to be true about the world.

Heterogenous points of view in your company provide more ways to do things, plus odds are, they’re providing a new way to approach problems because those voices haven’t had access prior to DEI. And it increases your customer base. Who thought there would be financial benefits to eliminating that?

When you study the brain expecting machine logic, you'll always find it flawed. When you study AI expecting human depth, you'll always find it empty. That gap between what we want them to be and what they actually are is where we get lost. The whole conversation is set up to mislead you.

This is hard to watch with my peers & lecturers as someone who went back to school after working for a very long time. It’s under the surface of everything. For folks where it’s about housing & food & chasing funding & fewer & fewer positions for addressing things that matter, we all lose out.
