Just another evening of stopping in the local car park to goggle at the sunset. Clouds like some lush 18th-century allegory of luxury & perdition.
Churning dark clouds with a rosy tint and a hole like a furnace. Hot pink, dayglo pink and orange piles of clouds drifting to mauve.

I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article. And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

Similar dynamic applies to teaching. We‘re in the room together—instructors & students—expecting honest contributions from each other. How to enforce this? Well. Those who willfully undermine that expectation are not actually in a position to demand detailed advance roadmaps for what happens next.

the ice coffee thing reminds me of some academics judging whether a grad student takes their defense seriously based on how dressed up they are. the whole point of a defense/interview is to have a solid opportunity for in-depth evaluation so you don't have to resort to thin-sliced heuristic signals.

Screenshot of the childes-db website: 'A flexible and reproducible interface to CHILDES.' childes-db 2026.1 contains 56,579 transcripts from 9,151 children across 437 corpora, with panels for an R API tutorial and interactive visualizations of mean length of utterance by child age.

None of us can top E.B. White on this argument
“Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last--the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.”
