The restriction of the prize to three individuals when most scientific discovery results from collaborative and cooperative research is probably the leading cause of Nobel Prize controversies. faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1096/...

He may have invented one of neuroscience’s biggest advances. But you’ve never heard of him
The saga of Zhuo-Hua Pan, perhaps the rightful inventor of optogenetics, raises the question of what it means to invent something in science.

It's like "Model takeover". Once model meant a simplified sketch, now it means the thing itself. We model minds as information processors, then we treat minds as information processors. We model life as code, then we frame biology as data to rewrite/redistribute.

When one field's metaphors become society's default, they stop being "a way to see" and become "the only way to think." The power isn't in the words - it's in forgetting they're metaphors at all.

I think this is called "metaphoric projection". Like the map becomes the territory. When CS/engineering is the dominant language, everything becomes an engineering problem, even things that aren't built to be fixed, only lived: grief, joy, belonging, meaning.

Treating #AI systems as of they were human invariably involves an impoverished conception of human cognition. We elevate the machines by demoting ourselves.

We keep treating AI like it has a brain like it thinks, feels, means things. And then we turn around and treat human brains like they're just systems to debug: fix your focus, optimize your productivity, patch your "inefficiencies." 😒

When you study the brain expecting machine logic, you'll always find it flawed. When you study AI expecting human depth, you'll always find it empty. That gap between what we want them to be and what they actually are is where we get lost. The whole conversation is set up to mislead you.

Dr. Jane Goodall died #OTD in 2025. She was a primatologist, anthropologist & conservationist regarded as the world’s foremost expert on wild chimpanzees. Her field research revolutionized our understanding of primates & redefined what it means to be human. janegoodall.org #WomenInSTEM
A feel-good photograph of world-renowned primatologist and anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall (1934-2025), famous for her groundbreaking, decades-long study of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park. In this intimate shot, Dr. Goodall is positioned on the right, her profile turned left toward a young chimpanzee resting its hand affectionately on her shoulder. Her gray hair is tied back in a signature low ponytail, and she wears a white button-up shirt with thin red and blue vertical stripes. Her eyes are closed, and her mouth is puckered as she mimics a vocalization, creating a profound, empathetic connection with the chimpanzee, who tilts its head back with its mouth wide open in a matching vocal expression. The background is a soft, blurred palette of green and tan nature tones, keeping the focus entirely on their interaction. The composition exudes a tender, joyful, and harmonious mood, highlighting the historical significance of her revolutionary approach to treating animals as individuals with minds, emotions, and distinct personalities.
