Our panelists will explore the impact of federally funded research on suicide prevention, how funding structures shape which communities and questions get attention, and the consequences of funding cuts and anti-DEI efforts on both scientific discovery and public health outcomes.

Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 22/07/2025
As suicide rates continue to rise, evidence-based research remains essential—but growing threats to federal research funding and the rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are placing critical progress at risk.

Psychological scientists study real problems. When their work is defunded, dismissed, or silenced, we all lose. Right now, lawmakers are pushing efforts to erase critical research—from DEI to LGBTQ+ mental health to racial disparities in care.

This study is small but important. It points toward an urgent need to differentiate suicidal phenomena. Blunt tools can cost lives and erode trust. 📌 Suicide prevention requires nuance.

FPSIs may offer a promising supplemental tool in distinguishing between SOs and SI. They can help clinicians move beyond vague language and better tailor risk assessments and interventions.
100
Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
This matters! 🔸 SOs do not imply intent. 🔸 They often signal distress, not danger. 🔸 Misidentifying SOs as SI may lead to inadequate treatment.
100
Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
The difference in imagined behavioral engagement was significant and even after controlling for depression & OCD severity, effect sizes were meaningful: 🔸 Large negative effect for arousal (β = −1.05) 🔸 Medium for ego-syntonicity (β = 0.64), behavioral relatedness (β = 0.58)
100
Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
What we found was striking. Compared to those with suicidal ideation, individuals with suicidal obsessions rated suicide images as: ⬇️ Less pleasant ⬆️ More threatening ⬆️ More emotionally arousing ⬇️ Less behaviorally related ⬇️ Less aligned with their sense of self
100
Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
In our pilot study, we showed participants with OCD a series of first-person suicide images (FPSIs) and asked them to rate their emotional and behavioral responses. We compared individuals with: 🔸 OCD + SOs 🔸 OCD + SI
100
Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
Suicidal obsessions (SOs) are intrusive, ego-dystonic, and distressing thoughts about suicide. They’re not the same as suicidal ideation (SI), which reflects desire or intent. Yet most suicide risk assessments treat them interchangeably. This is dangerous.

Elizabeth F Mattera @lizmattera.bsky.social · 20/07/2025
🧠 New study alert: Not all suicidal thoughts are the same—and it’s time clinicians stopped treating them like they are. Our new research explores how suicidal obsessions differ from suicidal ideation in OCD. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧵👇
