I usually try to explain it like this: picture Will Menaker as Cornell West. Now imagine they're Cuban. Doesn't look so much like the Brooks Brothers Riot was caused by adult Bluey fans floss dancing now, does it?

It's a "read the room" thing. Everyone talking about this is talking about how how a lot of people are loosing their careers, facicists are talking control of the media, crossovers are less likely, I posted sad drunk Bugs Bunny, and you are asking about a project that was already dead

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

Here we go, I had it saved on my phone. Again, you can tell Lincoln is a genius because if I was ever asked to edit something as good as the Seward copy I would just send it back with a "yeah, looks good man, thanks for making the first pass at this" in red ink.
Side-by-side comparison of Seward's draft of the First Inaugural and its final text.

Seward:

I close.
We are not, we must not
be, aliens or enemies, but
fellow-countrymen and
brethren.
Although passion has
strained our bonds of
affection too hardly, they
must not, I am sure they
will not, be broken.
The mystic chords which,
proceeding from so many
battle-fields and so many
patriot graves, pass
through all the hearts and
all the hearths in this
broad continent of ours,
will yet harmonize in their
ancient music when
breathed upon by the
guardian angels of the
nation.

Lincoln:

I am loth to close.
We are not enemies, but
friends. We must not be
enemies.
Though passion may have
strained, it must not
break our bonds of
affection.
The mystic chords of
memory, stretching from
every battlefield and
patriot grave, to every
living heart and
hearthstone, all over this
broad land, will yet swell
the chorus of the Union,
when again touched, as
surely they will be, by the
better angels of our
nature.

The owl of Minerva—people are talking about it more and more. Under Sleepy Joe Biden, you never saw the owl. Only at dusk. But under your favorite president we're seeing owls all the time. They're saying they're the greatest, biggest owls they've ever seen www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
ad President Trump, we wondered, possibly been reading or at least thumbing through—just maybe—the works of … Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel?

Impossible. And yet. Hegel’s theory of “world-historical individuals,” men who redirected the course of humanity, focused on three figures: Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Hegel described them as unlikely “heroes of an Epoch” for upending established orders that had previously seemed fixed. They were “practical, political men” who were each condemned in their age for smashing norms and for other conduct “obnoxious to moral reprehension”—as Trump has been accused of, centuries later.

Terry Pratchett's Lords and Ladies is largely a response to From Elfland to Poughkeepsie because he was so pressed by it, and then Carpe Jugulum is an apology and concession that Le Guin may have had a point there. Lots of very sly references in both, but my favorite is Oats' axe and box of matches.

I'm rereading Earthsea now and I've found myself thinking "well, obviously that's the best one" after each book. You can't even say "Le Guin was on a heater when she wrote those" because the series stretches over 50 years. (I guess I would accept "Le Guin's heater was her career" as a rebuttal.)

I think about this LeGuin essay a lot. (link in next post; you should read it too.)
Its technology is how a society copes with physical reality: how people get and keep and cook food, how they clothe themselves, what their power sources are (animal? human? water? wind? electricity? other?) what they build with and what they build, their medicine — and so on and on. Perhaps very ethereal people aren’t interested in these mundane, bodily matters, but I’m fascinated by them, and I think most of my readers are too.

Technology is the active human interface with the material world.

But the word is consistently misused to mean only the enormously complex and specialised technologies of the past few decades, supported by massive exploitation both of natural and human resources.

This is not an acceptable use of the word. “Technology” and “hi tech” are not synonymous, and a technology that isn't “hi,” isn’t necessarily '“low” in any meaningful sense. We have been so desensitized by a hundred and fifty years of ceaselessly expanding technical prowess that we think nothing less complex and showy than a computer or a jet bomber deserves to be called “technology” at all. As if linen were the same thing as flax — as if paper, ink, wheels, knives, clocks, chairs, aspirin pills, were natural objects, born with us like our teeth and fingers — as if steel saucepans with copper bottoms and fleece vests spun from recycled glass grew on trees, and we just picked them when they were ripe...

One way to illustrate that most technologies are, in fact, pretty “hi,” is to ask yourself of any manmade object, Do I know how to make one?

The hollowing out of political life to accommodate a movie star let that movie star govern in a way that hollowed out political life for a reality tv guy, and that reality tv guy is now governing in a way that will hollow out political life for a future twitch streamer or youtuber president.

Remember when the WH insisted that global HIV prevention & treatment was exempt from the freeze? When it seemed MAYBE they understood that cutting off medicine could put the entire planet at risk of drug resistant HIV strains? Wrong. Elon Musk’s interns were simply shutting payments off manually.

Incredible things are happening in the reason.com comments section
Reason.com comment that reads:

"My Hypothetical still stands, Mrs Osama Bin Laden, who managed to escape OBL's tortuous rule, shows up on Amurican Soil, September 12, 2001, and promptly gives birth to Osama Bin Laden Jr. So Osama Bin Laden Jr is a Full Amurican Citizen, with all the privileges that it entrails? Could even become President Osama Bin Laden Jr??
While Elon Musk, although a naturalized Citizen, can never be POTUS, because he wasn't born here??
Something's rotten in Denmark
