Honestly astounding how continuously pertinent Victor Frankenstein’s complete abdication of moral responsibility for his work has turned out
“At some point I’ll be able to retire and be like, ‘It’s not on me,’ I don’t have an obligation to keep going,” Mr. Olah said.

He wondered if he might feel guilty leaving this work behind. But if not, he said, “I think I’ll just go and, I don’t know, I’ll go retire to the countryside and garden, and do my math.”

The raw visceral hatred some men have for women, at least women who step out of line, is shocking. I know it sounds like some sorta "one of the good ones" ploy but I am genuinely taken aback when I see it because I think: I had a fairly normal socialisation as a man in the west, how did I miss this?

Frankenstein really is the original tech bro. Breaks everything and flees from consequences, all while casting himself as some kind of Miltonic hero, all the while everyone goes on and on about how wonder he is despite all evidence to the contrary.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

You’ll always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere: there’s no ship for you, there’s no road. Now that you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner, you’ve destroyed it everywhere in the world.

The lilacs have been putting out small, sad blooms in September for the past several years. They’ve been so stressed by excessive summer heat that they go dormant to defend themselves, then think it’s an early spring when the nights get cooler and longer. Desperation blooms.

A poem by Maureen Seaton
Save Yourself for Better Times
-Virgil, Aeneid
I will not save myself for better times.
I will use myself up now—and then
I will use myself up again tomorrow.
It's why my eyes stay open all night
and my heart throws itself to the stars.
To see which ones decide to stand still
and grow a constellation around me.

The 23yo claimed this 40+ year old t shirt this week. I’m glad and also sad, even though it was forgotten in a bin under our house for over 20 years. I lived in this shirt in college. I was much more interesting in my 20s than I am in my sad, boring late 50s. I feel disappointed in myself.

I’m in West Virginia, improbably enjoying a wine (Leirana) from Rias Biaxas on the first Sunday of August, and cheese from the Canary Islands, in celebration of the feast of vino Alberiño. I made chickpeas and kale with tomatoes and peppers from our garden. Someday I hope to see Spain in person. 🇪🇸
Chickpeas, kale, olive oil, garlic, tomatoes and a hot chili pepper from our garden simmered in a pan.
