Of all the weird recurring motifs of the stories people tell me about the AI labor wars, the *weirdest* is when bosses demand to be reassured that their contractors and workers will *absolutely* use AI to get the job done.

Sociolinguistics and AI: Kozminska demonstrates monolingual ASR models demonstrate a 30-50% increase in word error rate when presented with code-switching speech. This presents a serious problem when systems are used in institutional contexts, but multilingual data is the norm for many communities.

Doing some complicated (for me) and time-sensitive cross-border admin and grateful that I can translanguage — that is, throw in bits of Spanish — when my French fails me in real time. It noticeably reduces some of the stress I feel around the whole endeavor, and we're getting things done! 😅💪

Keeping an eye on it while you write can save you the pain of having an editor ask you (sometimes months later) for the URL that you'd intended to include. (If we ask you, it probably means we couldn't easily find it by searching online, which could mean it then becomes a massive faff for you.)

I can't bear to read about or see images related to the San Fermines encierro, and living not far from Pamplona and following Spanish media, they're constant. And now muted. I will never understand the appeal of this risky and cruel bit of "fun".

True for the self-employed too. There’s a good probability that people who might have hired a freelancer have been convinced that a machine can do the job just as well at lower cost. Some will realize their mistake, but the time between FA and FO is long & quite rough for the humans caught between.

As one New York financier told Financial Times journalist Gillian Tett, new hires who were seen as “AI natives” are turning out to have alarmingly shallow ideas. So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

AI can't translate. It can give you the gist of a text, but not an accurate, well-written translation. Meanwhile, translators are being replaced by AI, and many are leaving the business. Language courses are closing down. So basically a whole profession and its skills are being wiped out.
