Really, really agree with this piece from Huffpo. We don't have to accept the aura of AI inevitability. We can, and should, refuse to engage with it in our classrooms (and elsewhere, but especially in the classroom!)

So, uh... I just did a Google search which was not about homework... because I haven't been in school in decades, and I got this pop up from Google. And, like, I actually think there are ways to use AI in school properly, but this kind of advertising from Google seems... super sketchy.

One of my very largest pet peeves, as someone who grew up farming is when the advice to ppl who largely live in small spaces and have a full time job is “grow your own food” when most first time gardens produce enough to make a tomato sandwich and enough rage to fuel a jet engine

I could be wrong about this but I really think most Americans do not want to be forced to “do their own research” about food & drug & product safety and would rather that the government agencies that have been sorting that all out for them for decades not be obliterated in the name of “efficiency.”

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. The big story, though, is variation across subject areas. When we contrast the number of new endorsements (solid) to the number of job posts (transparent), we find that supply exceeds demand overall but demand for science and special education teachers continually exceeds supply in these areas.

Some universities are reducing PhD admissions due to federal funding uncertainties. While this is understandable at institutions like University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa that lack substantial endowments, it's absurd for Columbia to implement similar measures given their considerable financial resources.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
