whoops ain't been posting art, here's some sombergeist characters

not important background characters. Lots of cartoon birds and ungulates, rodents, cats, a crocodile in fantasy 1800s garb

Jeremy, a main character in my fantasy comic. He's a cartoon roadrunner in a floppy pointy wizard hat. Sometimes with a grass cloak, sometimes goggles. He's a cheerful fella.

Main character, Johann (Han) Schreck. He's a red haired rat in fancy military clothes. He's grouchy and old and sad.

An art student reached out with 3 questions about working in the industry. Normally I don't have time to answer these kinds of questionnaires, but I slipped back into teacher-mode and figured I might as well share them with everyone else.

How do you create the most opportunities for yourself as an artist?

The old adage is that "You need to be in the right place at the right time" for opportunities to happen, but that also means you need to be at the intersection of those places and times for people to discover your work.

The more places and times you can create - by building your skills, posting work online, going to events, interacting with other people in a positive way - the more chances that one of them is the right one that leads to bigger and better things, in that moment or later on in your creative career.

What drives you to pursue a creative career, despite its challenges?

I love building stories and entertaining people. Working in comics has been the most viable outlet for that, but I've also done work in animation, illustration, teaching, games and tabletop RPGs that scratches that same itch.

The thrill I get from engaging with people - the other creators I'm collaborating with or an audience that enjoys the work - charges my creative batteries and keeps me striving to learn more and make more. That act of creating and engaging people drives me forward through each new project.

What's something you had to learn the hard way on your journey?

There's no perfect job waiting for you in this industry and, even if people help you out, you'll still need to prove your worth and carve out your own spot, because there are so many more people who want to create art/stories as a career than there are full-time lucrative positions available.

If you're fortunate enough to be part of a team, respect their time, ideas and hard work. If you consistently do that, you'll build a strong reputation that lasts and, over the long haul, surround yourself with like-minded people who you'll want to keep working and growing with throughout your career.

Happy Monday! 🧁 #Art #Comic

Panel 1:
Me: "Wow... It's so scary..."
It's a computer with the text "WORK" on the screen. The graphics tablet has Photoshop open

Panel 2: Top down shot of me with a scared expression.
Me: I don't think I can beat it... I'm not strong enough..."

Panel 3: A hand from off screen pats my shoulder "Don't worry..."

Panel 4: It's a faceless man with a T-Shirt labelled "A Sweet Treat." He's holding a blood bathed baseball bat with embedded crooked nails on the tip.

Sweet Treat: "Leave it to me..."

someone on tumblr said it better than i could

I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

I'm sure there are folks who will be disappointed in the changes I'm making to Kilo Monster, but it feels right to me to go more lizard. #ocart #doodles 🌻🦎

A collection of sketch explorations of Kilo Monster's updated look. Notes read as follows: longer head, longer neck, longer torso, smaller hands, less visible abs (lizard belly) larger shoulders. less square, more rectangle. casual walk: arms sit forward when upright, cannot grab behind himself well, not great balance off guard. stands up straight when alert. there's more lateral movement in his spine. and most importantly, tail is still gecko fat.

The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.
And our governments are very much the same.

How I’ve Been Pronouncing It (Feat. Foghorn Leghorn, my… roommate?)

Comic. I’m at my desk, leaning over to the doorway, saying “Hey! Foghorn! Foghorn Leghorn! Get in here!”
Foghorn Leghorn is walking past the doorway, “Boy, I tell ya, I tell ya, not so loud, boy. What, I say, I say, what d’ya want?”
Next panel, I’m gesturing to my computer. “How do I find that really good manga you recommended? It’s an anime now? I keep getting Halloween costumes.” Foghorn leans over my chair, “well, boy, I say, I say, you ain’t typin the entire title.”
Last panel, I turn around- “you said ‘witch hat.’ Foghorn gets in my face- “open your ears, boy!! ‘Witch Hat Atelier, I tell ya! I tell ya ‘Atelier,’ I tell ya’”
