I don't care if "REAL ARTISTS made the stuff that is ACTUALLY SEEN in the game." If you SKIPPED OVER THE CONCEPT AND LAYOUT ARTISTS by using AI, I will NOT buy your game EVER.

There is a great study where groups were shown a video at a consistent, high frame rate, then the frame rate was either cut *or* made inconsistent. People always greatly preferred constant 30fps over 60fps which dropped a 1 frame every second. We are just hard-wired for consistent motion.

Every time someone tells me they like Python or that Python is a great first programming language to learn, I show them this puzzle and every time they agree Python's behavior is confusing. Here's the puzzle: given this code, what is printed?
Python code:

def foo(a = []):
    a.append(len(a))
    print(a)

for i in range(5)
    foo()

A while back, a student of mine told me he was worried that he might be too old to get an entry level job after he graduates despite being ~20. I told him that when I was in college, one of my classmates was in their 50s and decided to get a new degree "because I was bored of what I'd been doing."

It should be illegal for a chatbot to personify itself or insinuate it understands things when it cannot. As soon as a chatbot says "I understand what you're saying" or "I think that..." it should be seen as psychological manipulation.

My hatred for Gen AI knows no bounds. If your game has gen AI I will not play it, if your store has AI flyers I will not shop there, if your con does not have a strong stance against AI I will not attend. If everyone who was truly against gen AI was the same, it would be gone by now.

It's unbelievable to me how many people are stuck in the same argument from pre-1980s computing. No, computers don't "know" anything because they can't "think" or "understand" in the first place.

the amount of retro gaming-focused youtube channels i've unsubbed from over ai recomp/decomp coverage is getting kinda silly, like people i would've expected better from just gleefully presenting them like "teehee treats to play :)"

Hot gaming take: talking about genres is a complete waste of time. "I like platformers and RPGs," ok, that tells me nothing. "This game is a roguelike dungeon crawler," again, tells me nothing. "I like games that focus on mastery," *now* we're getting somewhere.

For all my fellow sIop haters out there! There's a Chrome/Firefox extension you guys can download an extension called "Al Warning For Steam" that will warn you on your browser if you're about to click on a sIop game before even clicking on it. No more awkward moments Stay safe and FUCK THE MACHINE

One of my absolute least favorite excuses AI vibecoders deploy against criticism is that you should just get over it because "every website uses AI now" And its like...yeah, that's the fucking problem. All the sites I use are starting to perform worse and worse and literally everyone knows why.

OH. right! i get it now!

i get why AI is so depressing to me. because covid already shrunk my world to almost nothing, where almost all of my life revolves around socializing and watching videos on the internet (which is being ruined by AI) and creating creative works through coding (which is being ruined by AI), often using open source tools and libraries (which are being ruined by AI)

i already had so little and now even that is being rotted away before my eyes

I want games with more blatant credits. I want voice actors names posted on screen when we first meet a character. I want a way to see art galleries in game for visuals with the names next to them. I want the music and artist in the corner when a song starts. Be LOUD about the game's team.

I really hate all the slop AI and machine translated (MTL) fan translations that are flooding the scene. Years ago, I was ignorant to fan translation sources, but having played many Japanese games for videos at this point, AI or MTL will never understand the nuance of a work of art. Fuck gen AI

the "iced coffee at a job interview" discussion is obviously stupid but also a great representation of the fact that every single HR person/recruiter has their own different made up rules for candidates and all of them think they are absolutely correct

Game devs who don't disclose AI generated content in their games should be thrown in a dungeon forever.

We need to spend our energy stopping AI not because "hypothetically there's a chance it does something horrible" but because it's *currently* doing a lot of horrible things (even if some of those horrible things are a bit abstract or more complicated than "shooting you with a gun")

all vibe-coded ports look and feel like shit because theyre made by people without the experience or passion to pay attention to the small details these projects are like a disease to the reverse engineering community and must be rejected at all costs if we want to maintain a standard of quality

we have control mechanisms for this. it's called The Law. these guys should be held personally liable for these harms. the suicides, the thefts, the intrusions into computer systems. they should be sued and prosecuted as appropriate. problem immediately solved

Just got through a spur of the moment playthrough of Pikmin (technically Pikmin Squared, a remake in the second game's engine). Always a good time, even if it's a bit jank. Completed the game in 13/30 days (2 hours 12 minutes). Made some really stupid mistakes; could have done it in 11 😅

Genuinely good advice. Double and half are immediately felt by the player while something like 5% or even 20% can be obviously calculable, but the player is almost certainly not going to notice unless they start A-B testing (you do not want them to think that is the right choice)

Kinda depressing how often nowadays I go "ooh interesting game", then go check its steam page to find a bunch of AI use. Can we just, not do that? Like, it immediately tanks any credibility you and your game has and no matter how much you replace later, it still feels like slop.

People keep saying how "there's not gonna be any more games to play that don't use genAI so why bother fighting it" and it's like, even with me ignoring games with genAI my backlog is still filling up with good games so idk what the issue is.

People using AI to program games is kinda sad cuz i feel like part of the fun with programming is the result of seeing something i coded work and function like i wanted it to, like hell yeah i managed to make a competent dialogue system just by watching some tutorials and having some intuition.

Most indie devs will not see financial returns on their project. If you have the opportunity to work on your game as a personal/side thing *along side* your stable day job, you will not regret it.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

No A.I. is a rule in my game jam, not a request. It's a trust-based system, and I actively oppose any witchhunts. But please don't. If you use A.I., at all, please don't enter your game into my jam. It clashes so harshly with my core interests, efforts, and ethics. Please let us have this space.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

A world where a twist ending is repurposed as a video title. where a thing's climax has been removed, leaving an advertisment for the gap where it used to be. such things are commonplace in. the twilight zone

I wish so badly that we treated this set of software like any other set of software. This is an obvious scam to convince people that companies can't be held liable for things they do because "the AI did it, not us!"

When a game studio ships a solid game, it creates TWO valuable products: 1. A solid game. 2. The team that spent years learning how to work together make a game. Because Western studios keep disbanding #2 while development cycles get longer; we will inevitably see less of #1.
