Jonah Jackson: “You can feel the air getting sucked out of the defense after a while — just the wearing and tearing on them. … That’s a good feeling.” @danwiederer.bsky.social on another punishing effort from the Bears’ run game, especially on the final drive

Chicago Bears’ punishing final drive symbolizes the grit of Ben Johnson’s team (Gift Article)
With 232 rushing yards and a dominant edge in time of possession, the Bears are doing more than surviving without Caleb Williams.

Per Bears PR, D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai are the first teammates in team history each with 300+ rushing yards through the first four weeks in the season. They're the first duo since Walter Payton/Roland Harper in 1978 to each have 200+ rush yards in the first four games.

The Bears have run 49 plays, the most in a first half for the franchise since at least 2000 (per @trumedia.bsky.social). The last team to run at least 49 plays in the first half was the Jets in 2023 against the Commanders.

we are currently in the same situation with respect to powerful AI models that ancient athenians found themselves in with respect to the rise of sophistic education and the art of eloquence. plato pointed out that being very eloquent was not the same as being good and ran the table on the sophists

Life has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. We all use the internet far more, and are far less likely to read books, host friends, attend parties, play cards, attend classes, join clubs, go to picnics, and stay late to work. www.derekthompson.org/p/the-death-...

As I watched the movie, I couldn’t help but dwell on the gross hypocrisy of the show To Catch a Predator itself which I of course watched with the same enthrallment as everyone else. At a time when children, including myself, were ruthlessly made into sexual objects, the pedophile acted as a kind of tulpa or totem for what was, in reality, a societal sin. I was fourteen when the movie’s central travesty happened, when the district attorney shot himself. Where I went to school, if you didn’t dress revealingly (tight t-shirt, low-rise jeans, push up bra) you were relentlessly bullied for being a dyke. If you did dress that way you -- a thirteen year old girl -- were called a slut instead.

If you were fat, you were a pariah, fair game for ritual humiliation. If you were 80 lbs you were fat. Everyone suspected everyone else of being “a fag.” When you went to the nurses’ office at lunch to take your pills everyone called you retarded because someone found out you had ADHD. Your peers worked overtime to find some way to humiliate you, some way to make a spectacle out of you and of themselves at the same moment. Everyone behaved as though they were on TV, because TV was just as juvenile as real life. Girls went on MTV to have their bodies rated. They went on contrived and embarrassing dating shows. This was a time when peers and adults alike would talk about how your tits were too big for your age and about how they couldn't wait for you to turn 18.

This gets us back to Kant and early modern philosophy. The problem with the standard story isn't so much it is false - it isn't - or wildly over-simplified - it is but sometimes that's fine. The problem is: Kant who looks at empiricism & rationalism & smoothens the contradiction isn't revolutionary.

maybe less complete aphantasia, but I feel like this tracks with how/why I like to think about objects in skeletal outlines – there's (probably) something there, but I straight-up don't process the "grain" in imagination
