I hope Carney and the premiers know that they are destroying higher education rather quickly. This is bad for youth, and bad for research and innovation. I hope they know this because if they're not purposefully destroying, then they are incredibly incompetent and stubborn. Somehow that's scarier.

I remain astounded at the failure of universities, as supposed centres for critical enquiry, to challenge the ideological capture of AI. The only AI policy that is ethical, fair and defensible for students is an outright ban on its use.

I really hate the framing of these stories as "an AI agent broke out and hacked something." No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. The agency isn't with the "AI agent", it's with the firm

Every time someone shows up half-apologetically, half-proud with "I just put this into [LLM chatbot]" it's nonsense we all have to spend more time making sense of and adjusting to. We prepare for meetings so they run well, we prepare agendas so we can prepare for meetings. This sets us off course.

Carney is now set to trample on rights, destroy ecosystems, and devastate the fight against climate change for his projects. So I guess it’s important that he rewrite history in this way, lest he see his own reflection in elements of history that we’ve rightfully condemned!

Our Conservative Prime Minister constantly relies on the old talking points. He gets to live Stephen Harper's dream: he doesn't have to deal with the fringe right wing and his anti-immigration, anti-Indigenous, exploitative and oppressive policies float right through approval after approval.

Disturbing, offensive, but perhaps fitting that Carney is seeking (much like far-right groups!) to rehab Sir John A’s reputation into that of a Great Uniter, rather than someone who engaged in horrific crimes against Indigenous people and Chinese immigrants (in part to build this project!)

Feminist theory remains undefeated in explaining the weirdest parts of the Trump administration. I'm just going to keep posting this skeleton-key-to-MAGA passage, written over 40 years ago, until everyone gets it.
"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.”

A final thing to consider is how Nathan Cofnas views Academic Freedom in his own words. Cofnas clearly supports purging the academy of his ideology enemies or think academic freedom matters. “From our perspective, there is no path to success that doesn't involve removing the activist non-scholars”
Action 2: Change the Population of Decision Makers on Campus
In the last twenty to thirty years, huge numbers of leftist activists have been hired as professors.
Many of these people have nothing to contribute to scholarship and are only here to push their ideological agenda. The activists are now so numerous that it has become almost impossible to be hired by a university without their approval. If they are allowed to control graduate admissions and faculty hiring for another generation, it is game over. From our perspective, there is no path to success that doesn't involve removing the activist non-scholars from these decision-making processes. There are two ways to reduce the power of the wokesters on campus: remove them by showing that they don't satisfy minimal criteria for contract renewal or academic promotion, or dilute their influence by bringing in some of the non-woke scholars who have been pushed out of academia for political reasons.
Regarding the first option, critics may say that removing, or taking any other action against, the pseudoscholars would violate "academic freedom." But academic freedom doesn't mean that taxpayers have a moral obligation to (directly or indirectly) finance lifelong sinecures for political activists, many of whom were hired by illegal procedures where straight white men or non-leftists were disqualified in advance.
Realistically, however, it will be very difficult to get rid of people who have already been hired and even given tenure.

A screenshot of an email viewed in dark mode with the subject line "Google DMCA Violation." The email from Google informs the recipient that they have received a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that some of their materials allegedly infringe on copyrights. It explains the removal process, mentions that notice details will be posted on Lumen, warns against repeated violations, and lists one affected Google Drive URL at the bottomA nearly identical mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. It shows a search for the same Amnesty International UK resources URL, resulting in the same message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."A mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.
