EXCLUSIVE: Anthropic quietly sets up biology lab as it ramps AI drug program
At a time when fears of AI are gripping the public, the startup has built a wet lab — or place for physical experiments — in the San Francisco Bay Area, two people familiar with the matter said.

An interesting read on software production at technology companies. The upshot seems to be that AI does almost all of it and engineers only review particularly risky snippets?

Anthropic doesn’t have enough compute to service demand; OAI may be demand-bound instead. if so then they’re in a position where they have however much excess capacity and they just need to find the best thing to throw it at, over and over again

David Pollard has a new draft, "Probability tools, tricks, and miracles" (last updated June 2006). Lots of good things in there, from a quick skim! And, if nothing else, worth reading for the quality of the writing and the exposition choices and notes. www.stat.yale.edu/~pollard/Boo...
From the first chapter of the draft {"How I chose material for this book"):

I strongly believe in the value of seeing how an idea can develop from
an initial brilliant insight (a ‘miracle’) to a ‘trick’ (a method known to,
and often developed by, a few experts) to a ‘tool’ (a method that is well
understood and can be applied in settings, even those unsuspected by its
inventors). Indeed, one of the great pleasures in my research life has been
the progression from first wondering how anyone could have such a clever
idea to the final realization that everything depended on only a few stunning insights.

People used to be able to impress and intimidate reviewers with complicated proofs. This will change. In the age of AI inscrutable proofs are cheap. It is understandable proofs that are valuable. Opaque complexity is now it is a sign of laziness or lack of insight.

Super interesting. “The point is that there are so many ways in which a result can be strengthened that it is hard to know in advance in which direction you should go. With the benefit of hindsight, it could have been done [by a human mathematician].”

Don't forget (a) heavy subsectioning; (b - i; ii) overly emphatic adjectives and adverbs; (c) referencing expressions with (...); (d) insane use of display math; or (e) introductions written in the stylistic equivalent to the colour grey. Every day seeing this state of affairs worsen makes me sad.

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

This is (selfishly) a worry of mine. Doing things is now trivial and understanding is what enables valuable contributions. In this regime having had 20 years to develop intuition about a subject is an enormous advantage

Use of artificial intelligence.  We are living in strange times. I do not claim to be the first author of this paper; rather, what best describes the situation is that I acted as a busy supervisor giving rough directions to an interesting problem to a student who is brighter and much, much faster than me. A student who then came up with the right proof ideas and fully executed them, wrote the paper and revised it under my guidance. I did not touch any of the writing directly (except for this disclaimer and the acknowledgements) but had the student implement changes according to my feedback, leaving this manuscript in their unique style — as I would usually do. I convinced myself to the best of my ability that all the statements and proofs are correct and checked all the references. The student, in this case, is Claude by Anthropic. The result is interesting enough to deserve wider attention (in my humble judgement), but it is unclear if the standard ways of disseminating work are still appropriate when so much of it is done by artificial intelligence. We will have to decide this as a community; for now, I defaulted to treat this as if it were a normal paper.

SpaceX signs computing power deal with open-source AI startup Reflection worth up to $6.3 billion

SpaceX has signed a major computing power deal with Reflection AI for access to Nvidia GB300 chips at Elon Musk’s Colossus 2 data center.
The open-source AI startup will pay Musk’s company $150 million per month starting July 1, 2026, with payments totaling about $6.3 billion if the deal runs through 2029.
The deal shows how SpaceX has turned Colossus into a commercial computing power platform, landing recent deals with Anthropic, Google and Cursor.
