Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

Use of artificial intelligence.  We are living in strange times. I do not claim to be the first author of this paper; rather, what best describes the situation is that I acted as a busy supervisor giving rough directions to an interesting problem to a student who is brighter and much, much faster than me. A student who then came up with the right proof ideas and fully executed them, wrote the paper and revised it under my guidance. I did not touch any of the writing directly (except for this disclaimer and the acknowledgements) but had the student implement changes according to my feedback, leaving this manuscript in their unique style — as I would usually do. I convinced myself to the best of my ability that all the statements and proofs are correct and checked all the references. The student, in this case, is Claude by Anthropic. The result is interesting enough to deserve wider attention (in my humble judgement), but it is unclear if the standard ways of disseminating work are still appropriate when so much of it is done by artificial intelligence. We will have to decide this as a community; for now, I defaulted to treat this as if it were a normal paper.

Reading The Subtle Knife, and I was inclined to say the portrayal of scientists was unrealistic, but the part where they've discovered there are interdimensional travelers, that the universe is conscious, and the government is spying on them, and they're STILL talking grant funding is perfect.

Michael Lewis's book The Fifth Risk is all about how the modern federal government was set up to reduce & eliminate a vast array of invisible problems, which it has done so well that it opened a door to wreckers who claim it did nothing, & are now making that lie true—with disastrous results

Listening in to the live Artemis II feed. I love the way they talk about everything (jargon, acronyms, plaing English) . Like a bit ago, an astronaut was talking emotionally about how beautiful the views were of the approaching moon, and Houston's CapCom person responded plainly “Copy. Moon joy.”

It’s fantastic not to have to resort to taxis just for lack of easy access to the local transit ticketing system

Indeed, the possibility of selection bias rears its head. How many times did someone do some totally unprincipled, stab-in-the-dark comparison of a specific quantum learning method against a specific classical method, and get predictions from the quantum method that were worse than whatever they got classically … so then they didn’t publish a paper about it?

If it seems like I’m being harsh, it’s because to my mind, the entire concept of this sort of study is fatally flawed from the beginning, optimized for generating headlines rather than knowledge. The first task, I would’ve thought, is to show the reality of quantum computational advantage in the system or algorithm under investigation, even just for a useless benchmark problem. Only after one has done that, has one earned the right to look for a practical benefit in algorithmic trading or predicting financial time-series data or whatever, coming from that same advantage. If you skip the first step, then whatever “benefits” you get from your quantum computer are overwhelmingly likely to be cargo cult benefits.

Scientific American with a great analogy for comparing physical qubits and encoded topological qubits. www.scientificamerican.com/article/negl...
Screenshot states:

Unlike ordinary qubits, which store information in the state of a single particle, topological qubits store it in the arrangement of several particles—which is a global property, not a local one, making them far more robust.

Take, for example, braided hair. The type and number of braids that a person has are global properties that remain the same regardless of how they shake their head. In contrast, the position of an individual hair strand is a local property that can shift with the slightest movement.

But even corporations with large R&D budgets don’t typically fund open-ended inquiry into fundamental scientific questions. With the possible exception of Bell Labs in its heyday, they focus on projects that have immediate commercial promise. Their shareholders would riot if they dumped $10 billion into a space telescope or particle collider that takes decades to build and generates little revenue.
