well I didn’t fail either spectacularly or immediately (I did fall 3 short of 31), and I don’t know if it fixed me but I did read way more poetry this month than I had in the past few years combined, and spent more time reading than I had in recent months. so it at least improved me #sealeychallenge

what in the striped pajamas is this shit
photo of a book titled “a Sunday at the pool in Kigali” by Gil Courtemanche"The novel of the year" is what La Presse called this extraordinary book, a love story that takes place during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda-by one of French Canada's most admired journalists.
The swimming pool of the Mille-Collines hotel is a magnet for a motley group of Kigali residents: aid workers, Rwandan bourgeoisie, expatriates and prostitutes.
Among these patrons is the hotel waitress, Gentille, a beautiful Hutu often mistaken for a Tutsi, who has long been admired by Bernard Valcourt, a foreign journalist.Author photo of Gil Courtemanche, a middle aged white quebecer, with the following bio: “PIERRE LONGTIN

I’ve been thinking a lot about this part from MLK’s Letters from Birmingham Jail; how so many “good” white people don’t want to think about race, don’t want to think about politics, don’t want to work for justice, and all the harm that negative peace has done
"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a
"more convenient season."
Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality … Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.” Letter from a Birmingham Jail
Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.

idk man, must we?
Screenshot from the New York Times Top 10 books of 2025 list

Wild Thing: A Life of Paul Gauguin, by Sue PrideauxWild Thing by Sue Prideaux
In the annals of art history, bad boy artists are legion, and the 19th-century French painter Gauguin often figures near the top of the list — denounced as a colonizer who seduced underage Tahitian girls and spread syphilis in the South Seas. Prideaux's enthralling biography, studded with keen close readings of her subject's innovative art, chips away at this caricature, fashioning in its stead a slyly witty portrait of an original and contradictory man who experienced extreme wealth and abject poverty, who abandoned his wife, children and country in pursuit of his singular artistic vision, and who fought for the interests of his Polynesian neighbors against the colonial authorities even as he took in several of their daughters as child brides.
