This is an outstanding refutation of PM Carney's double-speak on proposed Canada Labour Code amendments, from Colleen Bauman and Mark Rowlinson: www.thestar.com/opinion/cont.... Previous misuse of Section 107 would be codified & routinized, even though it's still facing court challenges. #canlab

Mark Carney says he’s protecting Canadian workers. It’s Orwellian doublespeak
Subject to ministerial review, the right to strike is likely to be much weakened by Bill C-39.

I do think it’s important that we draw the distinction between “feeling unsafe” and “being unsafe” because these are two very different things.

The changes to the Canada Labour Code in this new bill are “without precedent in Canadian law and they’re without precedent even amongst our trading partners in the G7.” “It provides the complete and unlimited discretion to the federal minister to decide who gets to go on strike and who does not.”

Make no mistake about it, the Carney government's labour reforms neuter the right to strike. A right that’s suspended when it becomes effective isn’t much of a right at all. www.thestar.com/business/uni... #canlab #cdnpoli

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.

Of course prices will go up. When you add in a private rent-seeker, the profits they extract have to come from somewhere, some combination of increased user costs and reduced quality of service. There's no upside to this, it's just a corporate giveaway. www.ctvnews.ca/canada/artic...

In collective bargaining on wages, there's a range of reasonable outcomes based on all sorts of factors, both intrinsic (leverage, relationship, skill, history, etc.) and extrinsic (economic, political, comparative, etc.) to the bargaining itself.

Macklemore is a real case study in how you can be Kind of a Dumb Guy but still end up broadly on the right side of most things merely by being generally quite good-natured, because questions like "should trans people exist?" and "is it bad to do a genocide?" are actually really uncomplicated.

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

There is no "value," nor are there "profits" to share from a company like OpenAI. The only reason that the entire tech industry is focused on AI is because they're completely out of hypergrowth ideas.

Broadbent Institute board members @peggynash.bsky.social (@policyalternatives.ca) & Jared Walker (@c4tf.bsky.social) argue for a windfall tax on the oil and gas industry to fight Iran-war inflation — an idea supported by a majority of Canadians. 📰 www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...
Block quote from a Globe and Mail opinion article titled "Big oil makes billions as Canadians face Iran-war inflation. We need a windfall tax" by Peggy Nash and Jared A. Walker, published June 18, 2026. the quote reads, "North American analysts estimate that gas prices won’t return to prewar levels until mid-2027 at the earliest. Oil companies are set to continue their high profits, while inflation ripples across the economy. A windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry could help remedy that disparity. And a recent poll shows a majority of Canadians support the idea."
