Supported by the British Council and UK Government, the EAMENA project cannot be dismissed as activist agitprop, which makes its conclusions about the IDF's damage to heritage sites in Gaza all the more damning in a way which should provide food for thought for Archaeologists, not least the #EAA.

Catherine Steel and I are thrilled to announce the publication of our edited volume 'Women, Wealth and Power in the Roman Republic': www.cambridge.org/core/books/w... @universitypress.cambridge.org #AncientBlueSky #ClassicsBlueSky #BlueSkyClassics
Cover image for edited volume 'Women, Wealth and Power in the Roman Republic'. Depicts detail of a gilt bronze statue of a Roman woman. Pergola, Italy. c. 70-30 BCE.Book description: In the Roman Republic, elite women were legally permitted to control substantial assets – and many demonstrably were in direct control of their wealth. They were also the mothers, wives and daughters of the politicians who built Rome's empire and, in a time of high mortality, could find themselves running households that did not contain adult men. This volume explores the political and social consequences of elite female wealth. It combines case studies of individual women, such as Licinia, wife of C. Gracchus, Mucia Tertia, Fulvia and Octavia Minor, with broader surveys of the institutional frameworks and social conventions that constrained and enabled women's wealth and its consequences. The book contributes to the recent upsurge of interest in re-evaluating the role of women in Republican Rome and will be invaluable for scholars and students alike.

Admittedly, it is not the most beautiful of vessels. However, by depicting a funerary procession and rituals, the Catarinella Askos is one of the most fascinating painted pots from ancient southern Italy. It was quite fun to write about it. doi.org/10.1017/S104... #Archaeology 🏺
This is a beige vessel known as an askos. It has a central mouth, two smaller lateral spouts, and two horizontal handles. It features a painting in a darker shade of brown. This painting features various ornaments, as well as human figures in a procession and a body lying in state, accompanied by musicians and mourners.

A hand-coloured engraving of a detail from a mosaic showing a crab set diagonally with claws pointing towards upper right. Between the claws are two features like eyes, while the curved lines of tesserae on the body make it look as if the crab is smiling, with the 'mouth' left uncoloured.

Statement on American Cultural Resource Management Companies and Saudi Arabia
White text on Black background.

Statement on American Cultural Resource Management Companies and Saudi Arabia

In recent days, the news of comedians accepting money from the government of Saudi Arabia to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival has cast a spotlight on the ethics surrounding business ties to a government with a documented history of human rights abuses including slavery, the murder of journalists, and financial support of terrorism. While the current media cycle focuses on the involvement of celebrity comedians, we take this opportunity to condemn the lesser known, but no less unethical, business relationships between the American cultural resource management industry and the government of Saudi Arabia. Namely, Chronicle Heritage, AECOM, and WSP each have extensive contracts with the Saudi government, with Chronicle Heritage specifically providing archaeological services to the Saudi government through the Royal Commission for Al-Ula to support the development of their cultural tourism industry. These business entanglements are especially troubling as they directly support the advancement of development projects that will almost certainly be carried out by exploited slave laborers, as is the case with countless projects sponsored by the Saudi government.

As a collective of cultural resource management professionals organizing for better labor conditions for archaeological technicians in the United States, Unionizing American Archaeology stands in solidarity with exploited workers around the globe, and strongly condemns the participation of American CRM companies in Saudi government development projects. Archaeological technicians who work for multiple companies on a contract basis are in a unique position to take a stand against this massive ethical violation by refusing employment offers from companies with business relationships with the Saudi government. We urge archaeological technicians to refuse work with Chronicle Heritage, AECOM, WSP, and an…
