An Assyrian alabaster bas-relief of a wounded lioness originates from the North Palace of King Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, Assyria, dating back to 645 BC-635 BC. Unearthed in 1853 by the Assyrian archaeologist Hormuz Rassam, it is currently housed in the British Museum in London.

The Milky Way over a northern Minnesota river. Looks like there's only one satellite in this photo. That's pretty unusual these days.
A vertical photo of the Milky Way rising above a northern Minnesota river. The river enters the photo in the lower right and extends outwards and to the left. The shore of the river is surrounded by green vegetation. Beyond the vegetation, tall pine trees are silhouetted against the night sky. The surface of the river is calm, reflecting the galactic core, the stars above, and the tree silhouettes.

Above, the Milky Way core rises through a gap in the trees at the back of the river. The bright core shines with a warm glow near the horizon before transitioning to cooler tones tinged with blues and purples above. The faint green and purple lines of air glow can be seen in the sky.

A depiction of The Odyssey in ancient art a day until the release of Christopher Nolan’s film #theodyssey 🏺 Roman oil lamp depicting Scylla, a monstrous sea goddess whom Odysseus faced during the long voyage. 2nd century CE Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich (8958599194)
Roman mouldmade oil lamp with two depictions of Scylla as a female figure with two fish tails. Between the two images of Scylla is a human skeleton and intertwined dolphins.

Scylla was a monstrous sea goddess who haunted the rocks of certain narrow strait opposite the whirlpool daemon Charybdis. Ships who sailed too close to her rocks would lose six men to her ravenous, darting heads. Homer describes Scylla as a creature with twelve dangling feet, six long necks and grisly heads lined with a triple row of sharp teeth.

Very Large Telescope image of Arp 271, also known as NGC 5426 and NGC 5427. The galaxies are tugging on each other with gravity, which has begun to distort their features and may have also triggered bursts of star formation. Credit: ESO Source
Two similar-looking spiral galaxies take up most of the frame. They both have bright, yellow-white central cores and well-defined spiral arms dotted with blue star clusters and dark dust lanes. NGC 5427 is a nearly face-on spiral galaxy at top. NGC 5426 is a more oblique galaxy at bottom. The two spiral arms from NGC 5426 appear to reach upward and act as a bridge that connects with NGC 5427. The black background of space is dotted with stars and small background galaxies.

Rare glass king piece from a ‘tafl’ gaming set, a strategy board game played in the Northern British Isles some 1,200 years ago. From Lindisfarne, Northumberland. 📷 Digventures #Archaeology
The Digventures image shows a dark blue glass gaming piece with white trail decoration, against a black background. It is roughly dome-shaped, with a rounded top, and a flat base. It is made of translucent dark blue glass, which allows the display lighting to pass through it. Across the top is a ring of five white glass bosses; one in the centre, the other four spaced around it, giving the appearance of a crown, indicating that it was likely manufactured to resemble a king. The blue body is decorated with swirling white trails of glass. It is thought to be a king piece for playing a uniquely northern version of 'tafl, a war game played in the British Isles before the arrival of chess in the 11th century. It was discovered during an archaeological dig on the small tidal island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, whose wealthy early medieval monastery was raided by Vikings in AD 793, heralding the start of the Viking Age in Britain. The only other example of this type of glass gaming piece was found at the Pictish hillfort at Dundurn in Scotland.

Tablet with calculation and addition of the areas of five fields clay 3200-2900 BCE proto Sumerian culture Jemdet Nasr, Ancient Mesopotamia present day Iraq #handmade #ancient #ancientculture #ancientwriting #cuneiform #tablet #clay #mesopotamia #sumerianculture #jemdetnasr #iraq #mathematics #art
Ancient Sumerian cuneiform tablets represent one of humanity's earliest writing systems. Developed in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 3200 BCE, they began as administrative pictographs on clay before evolving into abstract, wedge-shaped phonetic symbols.
Early tablets like this one were used for administrative purposes to record the storage and distribution of goods, animals and people.
This tablet comes from Jemdet Nasr, the remains of an ancient site in southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq).
Tablets such as this list quantities of different commodities using an early form of the cuneiform script, and the circles and half circles that you can see across the document indicate numerals.
This tablet is known as the 'field of the EN. It contains calculations for the areas of five fields. The scribe added these figures together and divided the grand total into thirds.
Two thirds were allocated to a person called the EN, which is Sumerian for 'lord', while the remaining third was divided unevenly among other individuals, including the wife of the EN. It clearly reflects a hierarchical society, with EN as a leading figure.
