Ted Lasso season 4 finale ended with this Mary Oliver poem. 💙💛♥️💛💙
When Death Comes

by Mary Oliver

When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn; when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse

to buy me, and snaps the purse shut; when death comes like the measle-pox

when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering: what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?

And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility,

and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular,

and each name a comfortable music in the mouth, tending, as all music does, toward silence,

and each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth.

When it's over, I want to say all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

When it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real.

I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument.

I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

I have a new poem, 'Scariest Monsters', up today at Tickets For Scary-Ness on the Poetry Express 🙂 It's part of their new 'Halloween Cancelled' theme, the rest of which can be read here: scaryness.com/halloween-ca... #poem #poems #poetry #poetrylovers #poetsofbluesky
Scariest Monsters

Pull over now, lay down your witches’ brooms;
for decorating pumpkins, there’s no need.
All wraiths shall be remaining in their tombs,
most headless horsemen stabling their steeds.

It’s been decided, judging by the news,
the scariest monsters are you and me.

This is my new account, would love a follow here!! Highspeed capture a hummingbird in mid-flight. High shutter speed freezes the fanned iridescent blue tail and green plumage, perfectly isolated against a soft, creamy background bokeh. #luiscordobapharchive #birds #hummingbird #birdoftheday #eck
Horizontal orientation high-speed wildlife photograph titled "Swallow-tailed Hummingbird in Flight". The image features a vibrant blue and green hummingbird suspended in mid-air with its wings spread vertically and its fan-shaped blue tail fully expanded. Crisp sharpness details the metallic sheen of the plumage and individual tail feathers. The background consists of a smooth, out-of-focus soft green bokeh that isolates the bird in motion. Optimized for hummingbird in flight, high speed bird photography, iridescent plumage, swallow-tailed hummingbird, wildlife macro action, and bird bokeh background indexing

Here's 'Cryptic', a new poem I wrote for Matthew Bacon and Natalie Harveld's Sonnet Sunday series on Instagram. This week's theme was Into The shadows #poem #poems #poetry #poetrylovers #poetsofbluesky
Cryptic

I listen, raise my ear towards the vent
as independent lady, heedful gent
swap casual conversation debonair,
convene upon congested market square.

It heartens me to sample graceful sounds,
those ostentatious treats of overground,
return to my familiar dark and cold;
I am a man of shadows, truth be told.

The joy of ardour, guileless, yet sincere,
to shoot the breeze, though neither freeze, nor fear;
when steeped with passion, burning up in flight,
let notions happen, turn towards the light.

Alas, there’ll be no candles gleaming here;
all meanings creep in metaphor tonight.

The Haunted Castle

by Richard H. Fay

I lie brooding atop this lonely motte.
My vacant stare surveys the land below
While my long shadow casts an eldritch chill
Over barren field and abandoned cot.
No living man dwells within sight of me;
I am the fortress of the restless dead.

I lie wrapped in dismal desolation.
Empty towers stand guard 'round roofless hall,
Mossy green mantles cloak crumbling ramparts,
Marshy reeds clog stagnantly muddy moat.
Bailey gardens where bright flowers once bloomed
Now sprout thorny brambles and wiry bines.

1 of 2
I lie shrouded in obfuscating mists.
Damp walls exude a choking miasma,
Dank dungeons reek of mouldering decay,
Deepest gloom defeats daylight's warming gleam.
Night's sinister folk reside within me,
Sheltered from the glaring face of the Sun.

I lie open to ghostly mysteries.
Phantom laird holds court in spectral splendour;
Noble corpses join cadaverous maids
Spinning raggedly across rotted floor.
Stern wraiths patrol above that ghastly fete
Guarding against all mortal intrusions.

I lie under a diabolic curse.
Dark stones bear witness to ghoulish secrets;
Grim holes echo with the cries of the damned.
Savage spirits torture imprisoned souls;
Wretched shades scream out in eternal pain.
Human fools who enter here face madness
And death.

Happy National Poetry Day! I love this year's theme! To celebrate, I am going to share some poetry collections I've enjoyed working on. DM Aidan @uphilldowndalew.bsky.social for a signed copy, or the paperback is £9 amzn.eu/d/04g82wVi, also available in ebook. #NationalPoetryDay #poetrycommunity
The cover and blurb of Why It’s Better To Be Struggling Half-way Up A High Hill On Your Own by Aidan Parr, features a photo of Aidan up a high hill looking into the distance, with green fields and clouds in the background. The blurb is: Raw, darkly funny, and fiercely honest, this collection cuts through the noise of modern life to uncover something real - something that bites, stings, and occasionally sings.

Aidan Parr takes readers on a journey through the grind of daily frustrations, the quiet heartbreaks of ageing and illness, and the absurdity of pop culture, only to throw it all aside for the wild freedom of moors, hills, wind, and solitude. These poems speak to anyone who has ever wanted to run for the hills (and actually did).

Whether he’s poking fun at celebrity nonsense, venting rage at bureaucratic madness, or capturing the sublime stillness of nature, Parr’s voice is sharp, human, and unmistakably his own. Beneath the sarcasm and bite, there’s a deep compassion and a fierce desire for truth in a world increasingly content with illusion.

This is poetry for people who think they don’t like poetry.
And for those who do, it’s a breath of fresh, bracing air.

Step out the door, feel the wind on your face, and start climbing. You might just find yourself along the way.

The Sum of His Doubts

She lay on the chaise, scrunched into a ball,
dress hooked high above her head,
praying to God for the front to call;
stayed sprung in that ball instead.

The cat without care (or perhaps too much)
soft puddypawed skin this while.
When nestled against her naked flesh,
still struggled to raise a smile.

'Your intentions are pretty, but unlike you kitty,
my lives have all been spent;
it is only the boy who can save us now
as I banish these routes well lent.'

From rock-strewn verge, one ball, full grounded,
hard pounded on faux suede shore,
though no matter how bitter a brow compressed,
no teardrop to eye was lured.

An hour later, encamped at keyboard,
made speech for bewhiskered bro:

'The depths of my heart naively greeting,
the sum of his doubts chose no.
Now all that remains is to slave from the darkness,
insisting in time, I'll glow.'

It was exactly one year ago I started writing poetry properly. I came home from an event to celebrate the appointment of our junior Poet Laureate and wrote this for #NationalPoetryDay 2025. This was the first poem I ever shared with anyone. The theme was PLAY and I chose to do an acrostic.
The Last Summer of Play

Packing sand around feet and legs,
Lacking supervision while parents are
Attacking seagulls that threaten the picnic and
Yakking with neighbours on the beach.

Postcard-perfect summer afternoons.
Lifeguard hut becomes a ship to
Asgard, or anywhere beyond the school
Yard from which you have escaped.

Pier jumping while adults stand and
Leer and shout out rules which you don’t
Adhere to. Not you – you’ll be bigger next
Year, and then you’ll show them!

Pour over books on seascape
Lore. Hunting for treasure washed
Ashore. A final chance to play before
You’re too old to remember how.
