A wild thing about Harris is that he credits his father for teaching him about the horrors of socialism. His father spent time in a Soviet POW camp. In 1944. Remind me, who were the Soviets fighting in 1944?

1. The Congressional Review Act which rescinds agencies can pass on a simple majority. 2. Congress can sue as a representative body. 3. Congress can change its own internal rules to allow citizen petions to the floor.

The IRS is a great example of where DOGE undermined the core mission: in this case, collecting revenues. It cut 1 in 4 employees, and 1 in 3 of audit specialists. Thats creates revenue losses. It also made it harder for IRS to collect the $66 billion in annual revenues from undocumented immigrants.
If DOGE was interested in cutting the deficit, as it claimed, it would not have engaged in illegal data sharing of immigrants’ identities because doing so has the entirely predictable effect of discouraging immigrants from paying taxes. If DOGE was a white nationalist organization, it would not care about those lost revenues. It did not care about those lost revenues.

Now the Trump administration wants to add a citizenship question to tax returns (and to the Census) to drive those immigrants underground and say goodbye to billions.

DOGErs were told they were breaking the law but that did not stop them. Kliger pushed the illegal sharing of IRS data with ICE. After his time in DOGE, he was hired by the DOD as - wait for it - Chief Data Officer. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/blockers-a...
DOGErs were told about this law, but did not care. Kliger called a staff meeting to tell IRS veterans that “Every agency has a superpower. The IRS’s superpower is data.”

Everyone in the agency knew that its data was valuable. That was the reason for the strict laws that prevented it from being exploited for profit or political gain. “He said this in a way that he expected everyone to clap when he was done,” said Kathleen. “No one said a word.” The people around the table – a group that included a woman who had worked at the IRS for 54 years, or 53 years and 50 weeks longer than Gavin Kliger – looked down, or away. Kathleen felt embarrassed for Gavin Kliger. But now it was clear what the meeting was about. Gavin wanted, in his words, “to explore how we can share our data with other agencies”. Interestingly, he never once mentioned Ice or DHS. Instead, that week, he sought to share data with himself, by trying to access files detailing IRS contracts with outside consultants that also contained taxpayer information. Kathleen denied him access.

Funny story: After Maryland Rep. Andy Harris blocked marijuana legalization in DC, residents would call up his office to complain about potholes and stuff. When the staffer would explain that they weren't constituents, they'd yell something to the effect of, "Then stop fucking with our weed!"

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC
BBC screengrab from within their Russell Brand trial coverage. Image of Brand in 70s-style aviator glasses, with earpods in, blank expression. Long dark wavy hair, black and grey beard, dark unbuttoned shirt. All on a fire red/orange and black background
BBC logo top and centre, underneath a subdeck reading: Fame Under Fire. Then the headline 'Russell Brand On Trial'.
The words 'fire'and 'trial' are coloured to look like they are glowing orange at the bottom

And yet, as he ringleads Trump’s vengeance campaigns, Miller actively fears retribution will one day come for him. In his more honest moments, he has told confidants about how afraid he is that liberals will try to throw him in prison after Trump is out of power, even if Trump preemptively pardons him, which will almost certainly happen. In these private, candid moments, Miller has told others that he’s convinced Democrats are going to be coming after him, his family, and his colleagues maybe for the rest of his days. Miller has talked about civil lawsuits, and Capitol Hill investigations and subpoenas – but perhaps the thing that stands tallest in his mind is local and state prosecutors who he says want to put him in a “prison cell.” Federal pardons can make it harder to prosecute former U.S. appointees locally, but such clemency does not preempt local and state prosecutions and investigations in the same way that it would federal probes.Miller has also privately said he’s worried that Democratic members of a future federal administration may try to get creative, and hunt for ways to get around Trump’s federal clemency actions. (Trump himself, thanks to his far-right pals on the Supreme Court, enjoys an expanded protection of presidential immunity; his underlings, however, don’t enjoy the same privileges… at least not yet!) Miller has also lamented the possibility that liberals will be filing lawsuits against him for years, if not decades, and complained about how the left will try to use “lawfare” to bleed him and his wife – former Trump official and current right-wing lifestyle podcaster Katie Miller – dry financially. (The Millers have a lot of money between them, and they lead at times extravagant lives and enjoy projecting an image of being some of the nation’s top MAGA socialites.)

to move the argument up another layer of abstraction: Silicon Valley culture developed in a period where its social impact was relatively limited, and as "software ate the world" and its social impact has massively expanded those cultural values haven't been updated to reflect such responsibility

like, if your collective culture has spun fully out of control, and popular perceptions of it are dominated by the absolutely most nightmarish sociopaths imaginable, you gotta look under the hood and see if maybe certain principles like "it's OK to fail, no matter what" are contributing to that

one of the key factors in the souring of Silicon Valley culture is the whole "acceptance of failure" element... it's one thing to not let the failure of some enterprise SaaS startup hold you back, but when your startup causes children to self-harm at scale maybe that failure should stick with you

These days, the truly inescapable sight in Lithuania is not the Stars and Stripes but the blue-and-yellow flag of Ukraine. It flies outside government ministries. It is draped inside hipster coffee shops. Near the Neris River, which cuts through the capital, I saw a bird feeder painted in blue and yellow. Don’t mistake this for a mere token of solidarity. It is a badge acknowledging Ukraine’s contribution to the defense of Europe.

Background on the lawsuit: www.lawdork.com/p/ousted-out... Statement from the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Ted Boutrous: “The harm this ban did to our clients, the First Amendment, and the public as a whole is profound. The Court was right to enjoin the White House ….”
We are grateful that the Court ruled in favor of our clients CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO and secured access to the White House for these news media organizations and their journalists. When the President issued his "ban on the free press," he blatantly and explicitly violated due process and the First Amendment. Since then, the President has repeatedly, candidly, and consistently admitted in public that he banned our clients from the White House to punish reporting he doesn't like and to try to force journalists to cover him in ways he prefers. The harm this ban did to our clients, the First Amendment, and the public as a whole is profound. The Court was right to enjoin the White House from enforcing this "unconstitutional ban on the free press" for the foreseeable future.
