The fucking literacy crisis is also a political crisis - if you can’t retain information and can’t see themes in what you read you also can’t retain information about your life or see themes in it - which is convenient for fascists and oligarchs both. You know you’re miserable and you don’t know why

One of the valuable things about historical thinking is that it fights against the compression of time that social media insists upon. It vaccinates you against the hubris that permits you to declare that you understand major world events and all their consequences perfectly clearly within 48 hours

The danger to my job from AI isn't that AI can do my job, it's that my job is made even more precarious by the way AI is shaping ideas of the value of work. It can't do my job, but it can be part of convincing people (incorrectly) that my job isn't necessary.

Warrantless searches sparked the American Revolution. In the 1760s, Britain made complaints similar to this about policing American merchants & resorted to issuing blanket "writs of assistance" to customs officers to enter ships, businesses, and homes without a specific warrant or even any evidence.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

This kind of "criticism" is straight out of 16th-18th C. England and European monarchies, where criticizing the king directly could be prosecuted: "Of course, I would never criticize the King. I'm merely critical of the King's corrupt and faithless ministers and advisors."
