Coercive control: Recognising relational patterns that affect patient wellbeing’; overlaps with patient healthcare experiences
We read with interest Lynch et al’s paper1 on recognising patterns of coercive control in patients; an important topic worthy of attention. However, the descriptions were eerily familiar to us – not from a domestic relationship perspective, but from experience accessing healthcare.

Why do people with ME claim to know more about the medical aspects of their disease than their doctors? Because the mechanisms that usually ensure doctors' knowledge fail in the case of ME, and sick people have created mechanisms of knowledge production and dissemination to pick up the slack.

4) The lack of good science and medical care has resulted in an active patient community that tries to fill in the gaps as well as it can. As a result, patients are often better informed about their illness than their doctors.

Thanks to everyone who watched my performance of The Secret Of The Poets at the Edinburgh Book Festival at the @iamloudpro.bsky.social Grand Slam! I'm still reading through comments ❤️ Here's the text version, which you can also find on my poetry site. I'll post a video soon about why I wrote this ❤️
The Secret of the poets by Fiona Robertson

I wrote my wedding vows with ChatGPT.
I’m no good at words. It does it better than me.

I typed out some facts and asked AI
to write my mother's eulogy.
I know, I know, her final goodbye
summed up by machine.
But I'm not a poet. Words don't come easy to me, you see.

My friend’s kid died and I didn’t know what to say
so I asked Claude and straight away
I had something to text him
and he thumbs-upped the message so I think it was OK.

I asked it to write a Valentine.
My best man speech.
My marriage counselling homework.
My suicide note.

I’m not a poet.
I don’t know what to say.

Let me tell you the secret of the poets:
Nobody ever knows what to say.
There are no words to mend a shattered heart.
No verse can make someone fall in love.
No poem can ease the ache of loss.
No-one can speak the depth of gratitude
or trust
or pain.

Nobody ever knows what to say.
Not even us.

Generative AI will give you an answer
but it will be a lie,
because all these words have ever been
are stand-ins for
‘I cared enough to try’.

Standing confidently behind a sleek, modern lectern emblazoned with the iconic blue, white, and red NASA meatball logo, she is positioned slightly to the right of the frame, facing toward the upper left corner with a warm, optimistic expression and a gentle smile. She wears a structured, vibrant eggplant-colored dress or blazer set, a classic multi-strand white pearl necklace, small pearl earrings, and black-rimmed eyeglasses. Her dark, shoulder-length hair is styled in a sleek, side-swept bob with bangs. Her hands rest gracefully on the clear acrylic top of the gray-framed lectern, which supports a dual-microphone setup. Conference: Zionism is Racism speech,
I speak as someone long been committed to the Palestinian cause. I've visited the West Bank 3 times, and Gaza once. I served for many years as a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. I view the Israeli government as racist, I believe its actions in Gaza amount to genocide and I support the BDS campaign. And yet I remain firmly opposed to this motion. Zionism means different things to different people, whether we like it or not. It has always been so.
We need to recognise and understand the complexity of how people understand it.
Is the Israeli government racist? Yes Is Zionism racist? It is both racist AND a response to racism. It's double-sided. The political Zionist movement emerged as a direct response to persecution within Europe. So for European Jews, it wasn't always ideology that propelled them to Israel - often they were simply fleeing for their lives after centuries of persecution, culminating in the horror of the holocaust.
Of course that doesn't justify the appalling treatment of the Palestinians. Nothing possibly could. But it explains why, for many European Jews, Zionism was historically a response to racism. It also explains why, for Palestinians, losing their land and sometimes their lives, Zionism was and remains a violent settler-colonial entity, exclusionary and yes racist, resulting in their expulsion, and ongoing statelessness. These things can both be true.
Conference, I urge you not to support the over-simplification at the heart of this motion - a refusal to accept complexities which is leading to so many Jewish members feeling scared and unwelcome in our party. You've heard how this motion will actually undermine our efforts in support of the Palestinian cause Let's instead focus on the vast areas where we do agree and where we can be effective - Showing our solidarity by challenging even more loudly the genocide by the Israeli government.
Not by alienating the very many Jewish people who share our horror, and who are our partners in this endeavour.

Why not then hypothetically ‘lose’ 2.7 million of ANY of the UK population to free up housing … 2.7 million..morris dancers or the rich ? Why are you so concerned about losing immigrants? Besides, reducing the size of the population by 3.8% won’t magic away all the complex causes of homelessness.

I really don’t think you can blame a housing problem on immigration policy which ever way you look at it. Even our house building programme relies heavily on migrant workforce. Migrants are building our houses. And if course vital and hugely valued in our nhs, care services.

If following that argument we could look at who in the UK uses up the most housing space. The wealthier homeowners use more housing space per person (ie higher rates of under occupancy) than the poorest. And white people have more space per capita than any other ethnic group.
