Conference: Zionism is Racism speech,
I speak as someone long been committed to the Palestinian cause. I've visited the West Bank 3 times, and Gaza once. I served for many years as a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. I view the Israeli government as racist, I believe its actions in Gaza amount to genocide and I support the BDS campaign. And yet I remain firmly opposed to this motion. Zionism means different things to different people, whether we like it or not. It has always been so.
We need to recognise and understand the complexity of how people understand it.
Is the Israeli government racist? Yes Is Zionism racist? It is both racist AND a response to racism. It's double-sided. The political Zionist movement emerged as a direct response to persecution within Europe. So for European Jews, it wasn't always ideology that propelled them to Israel - often they were simply fleeing for their lives after centuries of persecution, culminating in the horror of the holocaust.
Of course that doesn't justify the appalling treatment of the Palestinians. Nothing possibly could. But it explains why, for many European Jews, Zionism was historically a response to racism. It also explains why, for Palestinians, losing their land and sometimes their lives, Zionism was and remains a violent settler-colonial entity, exclusionary and yes racist, resulting in their expulsion, and ongoing statelessness. These things can both be true.
Conference, I urge you not to support the over-simplification at the heart of this motion - a refusal to accept complexities which is leading to so many Jewish members feeling scared and unwelcome in our party. You've heard how this motion will actually undermine our efforts in support of the Palestinian cause Let's instead focus on the vast areas where we do agree and where we can be effective - Showing our solidarity by challenging even more loudly the genocide by the Israeli government.
Not by alienating the very many Jewish people who share our horror, and who are our partners in this endeavour.

We need legislation to ban insurance companies and private equity from owning GP surgeries in the UK too. I had a quick google search and the situation for the NHS looks bleak.
From Google:

Yes, US health insurance giant Centene
Corporation previously owned a substantial number of NHS GP surgeries in the UK through its subsidiary Operose Health. O
Corporate Ownership of GP Surgeries
• Alternative Provider Medical Services
(APMS): Introduced in 2004, this NHS contract type allows non-traditional providers
-including private corporations, charities, and commercial entities-to run NHS GP practices.
my Tribe Insurance... +1
• Centene and Operose Health: Centene
Corporation acquired AT Medics and Operose Health, making it one of the largest private operators of NHS primary care services in England, running nearly 70 practices serving hundreds of thousands of patients.
• Recent Changes: Operose Health's UK GP practices were subsequently sold to the
HCRG Care Group, transferring ownership away from the US insurance firm to another private provider.

What MPs Need to Know About the SEND Proposal. Protecting every child and young person's right to an education that meets their needs.

SEND is in a crisis of compliance. Across England, children and young people
with SEND are being let down by the education, health and social care systems that should be supporting them.
Every child and young person with SEND currently has a clear statutory right to an education that meets their individual needs. But too often, parents have to fight for what their children need; engage in stressful battles to get what they are entitled to by law.
Why? Because public bodies routinely delay or deliberately ignore the law, meaning children don't always get the timely special educational provision they need.
Official figures show only 46% of new EHCPs are finalised on time. That isn't just a statistic. It translates to thousands of children waiting for the help they need. Many have no provision at all, sometimes for years. It also means parents giving up jobs to care for them, reducing incomes, increasing benefits claimed, and a lower tax take. And if children don't get support, they're more likely to develop worse mental health and become NEET.
So the real issue isn't how much the right SEND support costs councils. It's how much it costs the country as a whole if it isn't provided in a timely way. Life chances diminished, work opportunities reduced, family lives destroyed. And sometimes, even lives lost.
What's the answer?
The Government has the right intention to improve mainstream inclusion and provision. But the current law already supports this. However, public bodies must be made to be more accountable for unlawful decision-making that drives an adversarial system and increases delays, costs, and misery. Every child & young person entitled to special educational provision must receive it on time and without a fight. But the law must remain as a backstop.
The Education Select Committee provided a blueprint in their 2025 report wit…

Watching the efforts to fight multiple simultaneous wild fires across France and the numbers of planes as well as helicopters, involved in each one. I can’t help wondering whether the UK are anything like as well prepared for this. The EU (which we are not part of) sent aircraft to support.

Yes especially as it’s such strange by-election! Will that mean a greater turn out of DNV and will that work in Reform’s favour? Greens have been winning the voters that Labour have been haemorrhaging, but to really take the fight to reform maybe they need to try & reach out to the non-voters too?

To anyone on here new to SEND and wanting to get a feel of what’s at stake I recommend following the amazing parent Rachel Filmer of SEND Rights Alliance on Facebook. She has made these helpful materials and talks in plain terms about the way the Government have been handing this.
SEND reforms proposed changes. A table with three columns. Area of SEND , the current situation for that area, and the proposed change. There are 16 areas covered. By Rachel Filmer of SENDRA ( SEND rights alliance). Government aims to change the existing law and begin new system by September 2029The Department for
Education claims the proposals represent a
"clear expansion of rights" for disabled
children and young people.
Here is the reality...
"Some of these measures have already been finalised, and this is clearly
indicated within the document"

(There are 12 rights reduced or removed and only one new right brought about by these reforms)

The Special Educational Needs and Disability reform proposals for education in England have been met with dismay and anger by those affected. Some say it would represent the biggest reduction in children’s rights in a generation. This table by the amazing Rachel Filmer of SENDRA explains why:

Yes. Looking at this graph the Green Party could well be getting the voters that Labour are haemorrhaging and worryingly Reform are still quite stable. yougov.com/en-gb/tracke...
You Gov UK poll - a graph with percentages on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal. I’ve set it to illustrate just the results for Labour, Green and reform for Uk election intentions. Green Party seems to be rising from Jan 2025 to April 2026 at about the same rate as Labour is declining . Reforms blue line on the other hand looks fairly promising for stable. I’m not religious, but isn’t the King also head of the Church of England.. The Pope, has taken a much more principled position:
X Post by Josh Helfgoff with a photo of the Pope speaking .
The Pope's response to being threatened by the Pentagon?
-He canceled his July 4th US visit.
-He's spending America's 250th birthday on Lampedusa, the island where African migrants wash ashore.
-Then this week he told Catholics to call their representatives and demand an end to the Iran war.

Does look like the bill proposes an increase in UC for the standard allowance but a cut and a freeze in the health element, which is for sick&disabled people. Make that make sense!? What a mess. It was such a shambles I wonder how many even knew for sure what they were voting for at the end.
Without reform to personal independence payment, the watered down bill is not expected to deliver any savings over the next four years.
This is because over this period the forecast savings from reducing the universal credit
(UC) health element for new claimants (£1.7bn in 2029-30) will be roughly offset by the cost of increasing the UC standard allowance. ( from the Guardian 2nd July) Bluesky post :
Carri Swann
@carriswann.bsky.social
For existing claimants, the value of health elements will be frozen at their current rates until 2029.
So no inflationary increases each April when other benefits (and other parts of
UC) are uprated.

And fortunately, we have law! The Public Sector Equality Duty means that Councils have to do EDI work. Theres a general duty explained here & specific duties (like setting objectives & reporting). Things they must do. Sacking particular workers wouldn’t get rid of the legal duty to do the work.
The general duty requires public authorities, in the exercise of their functions, to have due regard to the need to:
• eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other unlawful conduct prohibited by the act
• advance equality of opportunity between people who share and people who do not share a relevant protected characteristic
• foster good relations between people who share and people who do not share a relevant protected characteristic

I’m concerned about how Labour are treating immigrants (deportations, detention camps, no safe routes); trans people (health policy as well as the court ruling) & disabled people (brutal cuts to benefits). Labour need to show leadership to stop fascism not collude with it. And break this cycle:
A diagram showing a causation circle: wealth inequality grows which causes conditions to worsen for most which causes far right populism to grow which causes more right wing policies which cause wealth inequality to grow …. ( I’d argue we need to break the cycle )

Interesting article! Worth getting to the very end, when implications for the UK are summarised:
The UK Supreme Court decision applies to one word in one act. But, without coming undone from the principles of data protection, the UK state can't lawfully take actions to process people's gender data in a way that ignores their lived experience in favour of their gender status at birth. If the government tries to operationalise the judgment more generally, the UK GDPR sits waiting for it like the troll under the bridge.
