Pierre-Auguste Renoir : Umbrellas, 1881 Oil on canvas National Gallery in London Further description in the alt text 👇
Two Distinct Styles:
Renoir painted the canvas in two separate phases with a gap of roughly four years. The right side (a mother and her two daughters) features loose, feathery Impressionist brushwork with luminous blues and warm tones. The left side (the prominent young woman and background) was completed around 1885–1886 after Renoir grew disillusioned with Impressionism and adopted a sharper, linear, classical style inspired by Ingres and old masters.

Hidden Revisions:
X-ray analysis reveals that the principal woman on the left originally wore a fashionable middle-class dress with frills and a hat. Renoir later repainted her into a simpler, working-class milliner's assistant holding a bandbox.

Composition:
The top portion of the canvas is dominated by a canopy of geometric, semicircular umbrellas, while the tight framing of foreground figures prefigures modern street photography.

“I’m fifty, mark you; once back from this cruise, I set up gentleman in earnest.” TFW you realise you’re older than Long John Silver—& you ain’t got his retirement plan, neither… #TalkLikeAPirateDay 🏴‍☠️ #FinancialPlanningLikeAPirateDay💰
Here it is about gentlemen of fortune. They lives rough, and they risk swinging, but they eat and drink like fighting-cocks, and when a cruise is done, why, it’s hundreds of pounds instead of hundreds of farthings in their pockets. Now, the most goes for rum and a good fling, and to sea again in their shirts. But that’s not the course I lay. I puts it all away, some here, some there, and none too much anywheres, by reason of suspicion. I’m fifty, mark you; once back from this cruise, I set up gentleman in earnest. Time enough too, says you. Ah, but I’ve lived easy in the meantime, never denied myself o’ nothing heart desires, and slep’ soft and ate dainty all my days but when at sea. And how did I begin? Before the mast, like you!

One way we can reconstruct ancient trade networks is via the presence of foreign coinage. This map shows locations of recovered coins of /purported/ Roman lineage. In 2013, on the island of Okinawa, 4th-century AD Roman bronze coins were excavated from the ruins of Katsuren Castle.
A crude relief/ecology map of Eurasia and Northern Africa, showing the location of Roman coinage (purported, many of these were amateur finds never confirmed), and the concentrations are in Europe, the Nile and India, with some coins in China, Vietnam and Japan.

This beautifully detailed silver and gilt pyxis (lidded box) was probably made in a Greek workshop in Apulia, eventually deposited in an #Etruscan tomb. How do we know? It’s inscribed with the Etruscan word ‘śuthina’ (‘for the tomb’), marking it as the property of the deceased. 🏺 1/ 📸 me
Silver and gilt pyxis (box with lid), part of a group of three items known as the Bolsena silver. The bands of ornament on the box and alternate leaves on the pointed lid have gilding. The inscription written on the side of the cylindrical box in Etruscan must have been added subsequently. It reads śuthina, meaning "of [for] the tomb" suggesting that the objects were acquired by an Etruscan and buried with him.

The pyxis itself was originally manufactured as a luxury item in Apulia (southern Italy), likely in a Greek workshop. Marking an item as śuthina served a religious function in Etruscan burial practices. It legally and spiritually designated the luxury object as property of the deceased and the underworld deities. Once marked "for the tomb," the item was consecrated and could never be reused or stolen for the world of the living.

Height: with cover 3 5/16 in. (8.4 cm)

Apulian, possibly Tarentine, early 3rd c. BCE, Met Museum (03.24.6)
