Another big one is teaching your son to see girls as equals. Instead of enrolling him in sex-segregated sports, introduce him to a co-ed team. And help him foster his more “feminine” interests where we can be in mixed-sex spaces, making mixed-sex friend groups.

Teach your son to wait. Teach him that other people are as important as he is. Teach him to apologize and go back to the end of the line if he made an entitled decision. Teach him that girls and women deserve respect in *all* scenarios—not just during sex.

I also always think about how little boys are permitted to behave at zoos. Every time I go to a zoo, I watch mothers apologize behind their sons’ backs as they push to the front of the crowd to see an animal. Or worse—they ask other people to move to the side to let their sons cut the line. 😬

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

Turns out David Fincher’s THE KILLER (2023) is the perfect film for a brain turned to pudding by jet lag. It’s a silly little script with the worst Swinton performance I’ve ever seen, but Fassbender’s deadpan delivery and the cinematography are so soothing, I will forgive it a lot.

Scared and sad at the end of a gorgeous holiday (plane anxiety and fear for the future on various fronts). Reaffirmed in my choice to remain happily childfree after three days with a toddler and a baby. Have once again bought too many books and am struggling to figure out how to get them home.

Stack of books NOT INCLUDING the five I’ve already packed away in my suitcase. These have to go in my carryon. Along with the book I’m still reading.
