Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025But it also meant that every time someone tried to name a combination of lineages he had already done it 7 years ago. 090
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025Yeah, it may turn out that this is stable, but until we have more information it's not really worth adding new names. There was a giant in the field (Tom Cavalier Smith) who named every combination of organisms like three times a year and it introduced a lot of confusion. 270
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025For that reason, people in the field can be hesitant to name groups that only have a few very long branches, because often finding intermediate taxa break those long branches and the groups behave differently in the tree. 1120
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025There's also a pesky artifact in phylogenomics called "long branch attraction", which we try to account for but it's really hard to deal with when you have individual taxa on these super divergent branches. That artifact can artificially pull long branches together. 1160
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025The other issues is simply that new organisms like this are being described all the time so putting names on "groups" that are only groups because we don't know anything about what's in between, doesn't really help people follow classification. Adds a lot of unnecessary names. 1150
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025Put another way, if we think about animals as a "kingdom" and they're about 500 million years old (give or take), the divergence between Meteora and Hemimastigophora is almost certainly more than a billion years ago. So if animals are a kingdom, what do we call a group that is easily twice as old? 2401
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025If you see the length of the lines that unit Hemimastigophora and Meteora, they are very long and join deep in this tree. That means that their common ancestor was a very long time ago. If we roughly compare it to the brown "SAR" group below, you're talking the divergence between kelp and malaria. 1210
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025Not a boring question at all. The simple answer is that evolutionary distance isn't just about your closest neighbor. Let's use the figure from the paper describing Meteora. Think of the vertical lines as a rough proxy for time. 1191
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025Always the problem! And there really has been some amazing stuff described recently. Always amazing how little we still understand about eukaryotic diversity. 190
Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 10/07/2025In fairness, we don't really use Kingdoms anymore and there's a number of these new deep lineages that have been described in the last 5-10 years. Ancyromonads, Hemimastigophora..... but Meteora does have the funniest movement. 2333

Chris Lane @lanelaburi.bsky.social · 30/06/2025Yeah, generally there is more sustained funding with occasional pulses like the "cancer moonshot", etc. But if these cuts are sustained in the US budget, they will be the largest in history. 110
