Trump remains a whiny little loser: no Nobel Prize. By contrast, my humble brother and his colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2019 for their work in alleviating global poverty. Please celebrate with this "My Brother is a Nobel Prize Laureate; Trump Is Not" Starter Pack. go.bsky.app/PSn3i6q

Agree, and not to be 'everything is misogyny' but there's a reason domestic violence doesn't really count as a crime.

But the American right's theory of government is that the rulers and the people are in a constant armed standoff, and governance is a series of negotiations where they'll send in a pizza if we release a hostage.

Yeah, and the obvious question is 'written off by *who*?'. The only possible answer is 'the education system'. So ... fix that, then, there's your problem, and luckily the government's in charge of that.

It's a firmly held belief on the intellectual right that society is underwritten by the threat of violence. Police and martial law on the side of the leaders, militia and violent revolution as an option for the people if the state fails them.

A right wing philosopher guy once asked why people stopped at red lights when there were no other cars around, and I said 'trust in the system, the lights were placed there for a reason' and he said 'no, because they're scared the police will see and shoot them'.

The next President can presumably redesignate Mar-a-Lago as 'Some Shithole or Other' and punish media companies who refuse to use the official name.

Sherrod Brown's new response to an anti-trans ad is remarkably different from many other dems. Instead of accepting bigotry towards trans people, he pivots and links his Republican opponent to the Epstein files. It is notably different from his earlier ads. Subscribe to support our journalism.

OK, so the end of the movie where America goes to war with Canada is a televised execution. I really am starting to wonder if they've accidentally adopted it as the plan.

The two results that keep coming up, study after study, is that universal basic income and taxing the rich do all of the good things their advocates say, to almost ridiculous levels, and none of the bad things their opponents say, to almost ridiculous levels.

Brian Blessed’s birthday is an excuse to share one of the greatest paragraphs in any memoir ever.
A paragraph from Brian Blessed’s autobiography:

So the first time I ever came into contact with O'Toole was at one of these student gatherings.
I remember it well because I'd just punched Harold Pinter down a flight of stairs.

His line after the election is going to be to blame the Democratic majority and pitch a parallel universe where it would have worked out great. Dems need to get straight in and say 'things, now, are terrible' and use a lot of energy pointing out how Republicans led the US to where it is.

I think there's been a shift from Trump wanting to win the election by deploying ICE to shoot voters; then disrupting the election process so much he can declare victory in the chaos (which was his Jan 6th plan); to saying Republicans lost because they weren't sufficient in their worship of him.

Prison in movies rules apply: first day, they need to find the biggest guy in the prison yard and smash his teeth out. Nationalise Space X and ban Twitter in the inauguration address. Arrest the DOGE people. Letting him keep Tesla might count as cruel and unusual punishment, though.

This is great news, but the computer system which will fix the NHS is a myth told for generations, like Arthur coming back at time of greatest need or a giant dog on the moor. There should be folk songs and low budget movies about it. 'Millions went into it ... and were never seen again'.

The two markets for LLMs are rich cretins surrounded by people paid to say they're brilliant, and poor cretins who want to hear that but can't afford human cronies and are looking for a budget option.

Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
For one thing *of course* a telling idiots they're right machine is going to find a lucrative market. The richest people in the world, by definition, didn't need to learn stuff or read anything, or do anything, they're just bipedal debit cards.
170
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Once you understand that AI is a machine for telling idiots they're cleverer than clever people, a lot of the modern world makes a lot more sense.

Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Hypothetically, some senile, paranoid idiot with nuclear launch codes will watch some AI slop his care assistant showed and won't understand it's not real, and will start a war or fail to prevent one.
181
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
AI people are divided between the ones who think it'll kill us by becoming infinitely cunning, and those who think it'll kill us by being infinitely mindless. It'll kill us, if it does, because some human noblord will believe some AI generated slop.
192
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And the AI people have swallowed the idea that this tech will start training itself, that it will swiftly design descendants that will be massively improved. BUT IT CAN'T If it doesn't do accuracy, it can't make itself more accurate.
1101
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The pitch is that LLMs can give eloquent, grammatical answers to any question asked. And it can. It really can do that. But it has no way, fundamentally no way, to tell if it's the *right* answer.
191
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
AI is like that old joke where the musician says 'you hum it, and I'll play it' and he doesn't know any of the ten songs the punter hums, and the punter complains, and the musician says 'well, you haven't hummed it'.
140
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It's very cleverly designed, it's really sophisticated, it really is future tech. But it's fundamentally incapable of doing the job the conmen selling it say it's for.
190
Lance Parkin @lanceparkin.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The more people who use LLMs, the clearer it's become they're designed to give answers that sound right to people who don't know stuff. There's nothing in there that checks if it *is* right.
