you see, it’s hard opposing a PRA on the basis that you or your clients will be sued for doing weird & bad things to people. gotta trot out Big Plaintiff
“You can see the floodgates opening for consumer class action litigation — plaintiffs’ lawyers champing at the bit,” said Preetha Chakrabarti, a partner at Crowell & Moring. The bill’s detractors — including those who have regularly faced off against city regulators — argue that New York City would essentially be outsourcing enforcement “to thousands of billboard lawyers who would define the rules lawsuit by lawsuit,” as Josh Gold, a spokesman for Uber, put it.

It’s always silly when judges insist that they are magically nonpartisan and have no political beliefs, but it’s especially funny when you have a long track record of saying things like “ANY REPUBLICAN IS BETTER THAN ANY DEMOCRAT” (all caps in original)

DoD has its own research agency DARPA, which receives -5 billion in funding. A ten year contract to shift NIH funds to DoD is simply a budget cut to NIH. It’s also another example of how this Admin does policymaking by other means.

In my Sociology of AI class, my students are learning just fine what GenAI gets wrong - emissions, env pollution, Global South labor exploitation & digital colonialism, and promoting tech oligarchy. All without ever opening up a GenAI program.
So go ahead and despise LLMs all you want
— but recognize that your ability to catch what they get wrong is the very skill set you want to cultivate in your students. It is on you to help them build it.
