If you were living in Europe in the 1580s and 90s, you would likely have heard a few herring prophecies from Norway. Fishes with words about evil, fighting knights symbolizing the Ottoman conflicts of the Habsburg monarchy etc. appeared, and they all predicted something about the state of the world.

A heatwave cartoon for @newscientist.com
1. Title: The North Wind and the Sun quarrelled as to who was the stronger.

2. The Sun says: "I propose a wager: See yonder traveller, let us see who can make him remove his cloak."

3. The northwind blows on the traveller, the sun says: "You blow yet he only wraps it tighter!"

4. The sun shines on the traveller, saying: Observe! . The traveller mutters "nice and warm"

5. The Sun says "See, my kindness brought results!" The traveller has removed hos cloak and begins to sweat. "Fair enough, you win." concedes the North Wind.

6. "Tremble before my gracious heat!" says the sun, smiling bradly. His heat has started a fire. the traveller flees. The North Wind says "I think that’s enough."

7. "Let the world burn with my cleansing benevolence!!" blazes the sun madly, now grown huge in the sky. The land is a burning fireball. "Now you’re scaring me!" says the North Wind anxiously.

A complex graphic with the title "Out of 100 children in the UK named ___ in 1997-2024, how many are found in ... England & Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland". Underneath, there are six panels each with a header resembling the "Hello my name is" name tag sticker, with a different name filled out for each (Simon, Gemma, Dara, Meabh, Stewart, Catriona), above a 10x10 grid of filled squares representing the three country regions. Simon & Gemma are mainly England & Wales; Dara & Meabh are mainly Northern Ireland; Stewart & Catriona are mainly Scotland.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TRUE COLOR! 🌟 My second dumb book is out in the wider world today! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/555914... I hope everyone enjoys this winding tale of how this bananas color definition (and it's ~3,000 sibling definitions) came to be:
The definition of "coral," sense 3c, from Webster's Third New International Dictionary: "of textiles : a strong pink that is yellower and stronger than carnation rose, bluer, stronger, and slightly lighter than rose d'Althaea, and lighter, stronger, and slightly yellower than sea pink."
The cover of My Second Dumb Book! "True Color: The Strange and Spectacular Quest to Define Color—from Azure to Zinc Pink" in black text on a beige ground, surrounded by multicolored...cards? books? it's not clear and I love that.
