For whatever reason the 特製版 for the 9rip sequel was cheaper than the regular by like $20 so I just got that along with the Amazon special drama CD.

Finished Kureha, which was my first route in 9RIP. Already enjoying it more than charade maniacs, though I will say the romance and chemistry were extremely lackluster, but at least the story captured me. So that’s already progress. I’m probably going to give charade maniacs one more route and if it

I’ve been playing charade maniacs lately, and the writing in this game is so wildly all over the place. One route I’ll enjoy and the next is garbage tier. It doesn’t help that they made the protagonist a hollow cardboard cut out. like if you wanna make a self insert game, do it like sympathy kiss

Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.

I could write volumes about the Orientalism inherent in expecting translated Asian texts to be somehow intrinsically different in vocabulary and metre to native English. They're not foreign and exotic to local readers, why on earth would you want them to be different for you if you want authenticity

Love working on games, but I've learned in recent years that the excitement of working on a cool game is fleeting. A safety net, time to rest and not overwork, and money for building a life and retiring are more important. The talent will vanish if the industry does not stop underpaying freelancers.

We've been calling them 'words.' But here's the thing: that's not quite tadashii. A kotoba isn't a word. They're something else entirely- a role unique to Japanese gengo. And there's no eigo no kotoba that surus it seigi. So from ima on, wareware tsukau the hontou no kotoba: kotoba.

A lot of mistranslations I’ve seen is because the translator didn’t stop and slow down and read the text properly. Feels like an error caused by speeding through the work, which I can understand in this industry the pay isn’t always the best and sometimes people have packed schedules. That said…

For manga and light novels, rates are generally determined by the publishers, so negotiation is difficult For translators, $5/page for manga and $10/page for light novels are the lower end of market rate, but rates vary from $1-$9/page or $1000-$1500/vol (manga) and $6-$15/page (LNs)

As much as I love translating adult manga, if you're a mangaka and you have a single frame with 30 SFX all of which are various versions of TREMBLE, THRUST, SMACK, and SQUELCH... Maybe it's time you reined it in a little. 🫠 Also RIP in advance to the letterer.
