I have never read a more useful footnote. (From Michael D.C. Drout’s The Tower and the Ruin.)
* An easy mnemonic is to note that "TEEN-aged MU-tant NIN-ja TUR-tles" is in trochaic tetrameter, as each word follows the pattern of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable (trochee), and there are four words (tetra). Another potentially useful mnemonic (at least for readers of a certain age) is this rhyming couplet consisting of two lines of trochaic tetrameter: "HOLD the / PICK-le / HOLD the / LET-tuce | SPE-cial |
OR-ders / DON'T up-/SET us."

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows.

I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

Italian health pass enabling bearer to pass despite quarantines due to plague, 1722. The word quarantine was derived from the Italian words quaranta giorni, meaning 40 days - the number of days a ship coming from an infected port had to sit at anchor before entering Venice.

Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti. "Please get the truth out about our son."
Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti
Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti

“We are heartbroken but also very angry.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.

I do not throw around the ‘hero’ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed.

Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

I was reading a critique of Deathmatch Island that includes this paragraph (the other game is Triangle Agency). This is one sentence out of a long essay, but allow me to dive into it in far too much detail. While both corporate, neither game is Corporate Memphis. Let's talk about them🔺💀🏝️➡️
"Layout is stylish, Corporate Memphis, like another game we recently discussed. It is used for great thematic effect and offers a clean, easy to reference. However, unlike that other game, it does not use these design tropes to create its own identity; it mostly plays the Corporate Memphis straight but with Scary Death Game words."The rulebook for the game Triangle Agency. The rulebook for the game Deathmatch Island.

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”
Post from Latino pollster Mike Madrid:

“Doing some research for an upcoming article on the last “mass deportation” of Mexicans during the 1930’s.

Over half of those deported were US citizens.”

Anyway, good morning from this evergreen quote from a guy we teach the kids is a great American hero
Frederick Douglass quote from 1857:

Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power conceded nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will.

As we gather to consider the nation’s finest and most courageous journalism, the Pulitzer Prize Board would like to recognize the tireless efforts of student journalists across our nation’s college campuses, who are covering protests and unrest in the face of great personal and academic risk. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary real-time reporting of student journalists at Columbia University, where the Pulitzer Prizes are housed, as the New York Police Department was called onto campus on Tuesday night. In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest.

I think I've mentioned this Ira Glass quote 3 times in the last week. Still feels true.
All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it’s like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good....But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.

Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that.

And if you are...in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work...It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap...It's gonna take a while...You've just gotta fight your way through.
