i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

When you say 'all erotica is bad, no exceptions' you inevitably end up down the rabbit hole of conservatism where LGBT folks, queer culture and anything deemed 'strange' sexually is renounced and eventually banned through legal means.

Whoa, no, that's not how this works. You cannot replace school libraries or public libraries with bookstores. We have entirely different goals and objectives. And the idea that we can just privatize public goods makes me full body cringe.

Heads up, Bookworms: There will likely be💀supply chain issues💀 this holiday season. So if there are specific books you have your heart set on for holiday gifting, I strongly suggest you buy/order them ahead of time (✨like now✨) rather than waiting until November/December.

Two extremely different pieces of art you’ve made. #painting #linocut #illustration
A painting of a sunflower on a dark green background. The brush strokes are loose and energetic. A black and white illustration of a bear playing a harp. The bear has a serene smile on her face, eyes closed. The harp and chair have curly embellishments. The there are textured chatter marks scattered around the image like those in a linocut print.

I just realized that if Texas lawmakers think our book is illegal now, they're really not going to be happy that the new edition coming out next month has a brand new chapter specifically about our book being banned in Texas.

Books don't tell readers who they personally are or who they are supposed to be. They do show readers a variety of characters. Implicit in that is this: "Here are some ways of being." Kids books aren't altering your kid to be someone new. They are simply showing them parts of humanity.

I’ve never met anyone outside of my family that has had, let alone made, pear pie but it is one of our Thanksgiving staples, and even though we didn’t travel this year I still had to make one.
Photo of a pear pie—the edges of the crust are crimped and golden brown, the filling is made of chopped pears in a thickened sweet filling, topped with 4 heart shaped pieces of pastry.

All you are saying is that you want to gatekeep creativity. That's not good.

drachelbarr & 20h

Neuroscientist here... creativity is a process. A process. A FUCKING PROCESS. Not an output.
Nobody is gatekeeping the process - Al simply invites you to skip to the end, to the output. Which, as mentioned, is not creativity.
Nobody cares if the output is aesthetically pleasing, because the process, the act itself, the limitation of a single human mind and the resulting creations that capture that one single inimitable human experience... is what makes a creation worth paying attention

Me scrolling on tumblr: oh yeah that illustration is by Trina Schart Hyman, one of my favorite illustrators, let’s see what the post says about her, oh is that what she looked like I LOVE the hair cut, I should do a studio portrait like that WAIT HOW DID I NOT KNOW SHE WAS GAY
The top of the image shows this text: “The artist is Trina Schart Hyman, an incredible and prolific talent who passed away in 2004. You can find a ton of tributes to her online from other illustrators and organizations, like the children’s literary magazine Cricket, which she helped create. She illustrated over 150 books, won the Caldecott Medal and Honors, and helped other artists land gigs for decades. She was also gay, hilarious, and one of the first white children’s book illustrators to include diverse characters.”
At the bottom is an illustrated image of an artist in a cluttered studio, desk covered and surrounded by books, mugs, plants, etc (and of course a cat.) The artist has short messy hair, is wearing a red sweater and gray jeans. She is looking out at the viewer as if briefly looking up from her work.

Todays read: Johnny Appleseed by Paul Buhle and Noah Van Sciver #whatiamreading
Cover of Johnny Appleseed by Paul Buhle and Noah Van Sciver, showing an ink drawing of a bearded man reclining on a forest floor reading a book. He is surrounded by trees, an open bag beside him has an apple peeking out.Photo of the bottom half of a comic page. A bearded face says “Father Swedenborg says that his work is the third testament of the Bible, after the first and second testaments. In his work, the tortures described in Revelations will be ended and peace restored.” A comic page with two images. The first shows Johnny Appleseed reclining on the forest floor watching muskrats. The second shows him standing on a cliff watching a sunrise.

I see a lot of artists on here questioning whether they should be promoting their work in the current political climate. The answer is always yes. ART: books, music, film, painting, sculpture - all of it - is the most accessible way to communicate complex topics, ideologies and emotions.

It’s coming along nicely.
A photo cropped close to show an embroidered part of a shirt. The edge of one sleeve is shown, rolled up at the hem and stitched in place with a decorative stitch. In the front of the shirt, grass and flowers have been embroidered spilling out from the printed illustration from the book Miss Rumphius.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

I obviously needed more bookish apparel to personalize.
A t-shirt with an illustration from the book Miss Rumphius. In the foreground a woman is bending to look at blue, purple, and pink lupines surrounded by green grass. The background is pale green, showing hills and water with pine trees and a small building. Sitting on top of the shirt is a plastic container holding embroidery floss in colors that match the illustration.

I made my pink hoodie cooler. I just have to wait for it to dry… (it’s oil based ink so it will take awhile.)
The photo shows the back of a pink hoodie stretched over a small table. Stamps resembling book spines line the bottom, one stack of books has a teacup on top. Above the row of books is a stamp of an open book with sparkles coming out of the pages.
