My colleague @sianberry.bsky.social is spot on. I know many Labour MPs know the Home Secretary's plans on indefinite leave to remain are cruel and unfair. Now is the time for decent MPs to stand up.
The Green MP Siân Berry has welcomed Miatta Fahnbulleh’s decision not to endorse the home secretary’s plan to make migrant workers wait much longer for indefinite leave to remain. (See 10.44am.) But she urged Fahnbulleh to go further, and to also speak out about separate plans in the immigration and asylum bill. The bill, which is going through the Commons, will tighten various aspects of asylum law, including by allowing the Home Office to recover from some refugees money spent by the state housing them while their asylum claim was considered.

Berry said:

This Reform-inspired bill is a legacy of Keir Starmer’s leadership that will harm communities who want to welcome and support refugees, penalise desperate people for needing support, split up already war-torn families, and force people needing asylum here to live in a state of instability and poverty for decades.

I urge Miatta and her colleagues to do the right thing, and speak up more strongly and sooner against these plans, so we can together force our new prime minister to drop this awful bill.

Closing R4 Extra is performative nonsense. No radio should be in danger: the production costs are miniscule and the savings near to pointless. I know the evolution of the BBC is inevitable, but the things to keep going are the things tha optimise use of the archive, no?

The *only way* that Labour could have justified Jackdaw as being immediately necessary but still possible within the journey to zero emissions would have been to *simultaneously* announce a reduction of the total amount of carbon emissions produced by the UK by significantly more than it added.

Foodbanks did not exist 20 years ago. We had better worker protections; a functioning social security system; no Air BnBs hoovering up flats; zero hour contracts did not exist; and, years before, student grants. It does not have to be this way. In a wealthy nation, poverty is a political choice.

Jackdaw is climate vandalism. Labour are putting Shell's profits before people and planet.
Green Party quote graphic with the headline “JACKDAW DECISION IS CLIMATE VANDALISM” in bold white text on a dark green background. Behind the text is a black-and-white photograph of an offshore oil and gas platform, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski pictured speaking in the bottom right.

Quote from Zack Polanski: “This is climate vandalism. Today’s decision by Labour is a betrayal of all of our futures, Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change.

The Energy Secretary has herself said it will make no difference to energy bills, the Health Secretary has admitted the summer heatwave added to pressure on the NHS and the industry’s own assessment is that will create only 27 jobs. This is a victory for Shell over the people.”

This is truly pathetic from Ministers. Labour’s claim to more than 27 new Jackdaw jobs doesn’t hold up. The green economy is >£100bn a year and growing fast. There is no future in fossil fuels. The Government knows this, but chooses profit for Shell over protecting our climate.

Unthinkable that Labour has doubled down on fossil fuels by approving Jackdaw – a total betrayal of future generations & contradiction of govts own climate goals. The science is clear: the only way to secure a prosperous future in the face of climate breakdown is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.
