even a game entirely about self-personalization—The Sims—has capitalist boundaries, because it’s a commercial video game. its development is also entrenched in antagonism: players fought for decades for compensation + life-representative bitmaps + affirming mechanics just for EA to sell itself out

more on information dis-access further expanding / entrenching this idea with Jameson’s cognitive mapping + Berlant’s cruel optimism for future work (+ presentation at Libraries and Archives in the Anthropocene Colloquium II next March @ UC Davis)
slide 3 from my 4S presentation, book cover on left is Alyssa Battistoni’s FREE GIFTS: CAPITALISM AND THE POLITICS OF NATURE, my text on right:

The library is not a free gift

Suprasumption of capital: the "fact that both physical and social processes always exist in excess" in the valorization of labor. The interruptions, "rough edges," and "fitting of disparate components into a continuous and finely tuned whole," abdicate stability of the physical and financial patterns "associated with many natural processes, while still profiting from the fruits of others' labor" (p. 98, Battistoni, 2025).
• Suprasumption helps to describe information dis-access as representing "the places where the material labor process spills beyond its containment by capitalist social forms" (ibid).Information dis-access

Instrumentalizing high-temperatured, highly-gas-dependent, highly-charged-affective-infrastructures, capital stretches out the possibility of neighbor-to-neighbor interaction

Imposition of data centers are consequential for the visibility of an environment of information dis-access

Access to information is aesthetic, requiring those interested in the information at hand to be lucky enough to know the right codes, to be in the right place at the right time

OverDrive's private equity, ownership represents that stretch between information provided through service-centered operations and cannibalizing politically economic systems that "hoard full control" for themselves (Greenwell, 2025)

AI doesn't "bring the archive to life" or to even "show what this looked like in color." The medium is the message, in the sense that there is never life in a photo, there is a material object with artifacts that memorialized technology as much as any moment. It's all more imagination avoidance

really nice time presenting at 4S about - information dis-access: my theory that capitalism “suprasumes” (per Battistoni) information, capturing excess of labor to continuously preclude access to info - workshops abt AI for the public - Library Freedom Project’s AI in Libraries survey results

I participated in some public library ai courses. I’m telling you that the state of literacies and the complexity of lives deeply enmeshed in the bowels of late stage capitalism cannot find a use case for an agent & if they could, people don’t have the scaffolding to imagine one that could be useful

The Neoliberal Grid is in Crisis
To protect customers from rising electricity prices, public officials are urging data center developers to supply their own power. But this approach risks privatizing the power grid…
