A supermajority of Americans expects more harm than good from AI technology and resists the build out of data centers in particular. Here is what Elon Musk and David Sacks think about that democratic perception in a nutshell.
Opening the program, Kratsios said the event is designed to build consensus around the “Carolina Principles, or guidelines that encourage companies to invest in frontier technologies while adopting limited regulation. After Musk spoke, former White House AI czar David Sacks derided the idea of the U.S. government building a “FDA for AI” that would approve new AI models before companies release them to the public. The Information reported last week that an executive order draft that would establish a self-regulatory organization for AI companies has stalled within the Trump administration.

Will Autumn 2026 mark the moment when education's diverse stakeholders reclaimed the joint enterprise of teaching and learning from the compliant and laissez-faire ecosystem that enabled "zero day" attacks on the needs of students, teachers, and society at large?

Educators, childcare professions, journalists, and the general public have begun to pay attention, including groups such as the Screen Time Action Network and their ongoing working groups. As journalist Natasha Singer writes (2026), in an excerpt from her forthcoming book, “a handful of [tech] giants have used their money, their might and their mammoth platforms to influence nearly every step of the education supply chain.” The authors of a recent report from no less “luddite” an institution than the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2026), acknowledge innovative possibilities, while noting “concerning effects on the life of the campus.” These include, “upending foundational elements of the MIT educational experience”; “increasing isolation”; “undermining student mastery and confidence”; “eroding the ‘social contract’ between instructors and students”; “making it much harder to assess student progress”; and “challenging decades of distinctive MIT community norms and values about rigor, the creative friction required for learning, collaborative problem solving, and personal integrity.” At the University of Chicago (see Vance 2026), a new policy for the social sciences, announced in an August 2026 memo, bans generative AI technology and limits the use of devices in the classroom. According to the division’s leader, the new guidelines “afford students the freedom to think for themselves, to listen to one another…, to make mistakes, and to change their minds as they engage with thinkers of the past, with us, and with their fellow students in good faith, face to face.”

Consider that “AI” today is not the name of a specific technology. It is Big Tech’s preferred rubric for the marketing of massively resource-intensive statistical models that mine internet-size troves of data (mostly “scraped” without consent, compensation, or credit) and which—despite the near memorization of datasets that would require about 20,000 years for a human to read—rely on armies of human data workers (often exploited workers in the global south) to make them look smarter than they are.

“The progress recently has been amazing,” Michael C. Frank, a cognitive scientist at Stanford University, says of LLMs. “But we still have to burn down a forest and scrape the entire sum of all human knowledge to re-create this milestone that happens in our living rooms over the course of a year.”

This yawning divide between children and machines is called the data efficiency gap. And it raises a tantalizing question for cognitive scientists and a challenge for the architects of AI models: How is it that kids can still outperform the most linguistically sophisticated machines ever built?

Implicit in the analysts’ models is a belief that Big Tech can use AI to unlock rapid productivity gains, allowing revenue to grow much faster than overhead. Bringing in vast amounts of new business historically requires larger sales teams, customer support and administrative capacity. If AI tools fail to drive the hoped-for efficiencies, corporate expenses will scale with revenue, and the projected margin benefits won’t materialize.

@wsj.com documents the gradual shift away from peak hype on the AI jobs apocalypse. Just. Not. Happening.
America’s biggest companies say they might need more people after all.

For months, major employers treated hiring as an expensive last resort. Now, a shift is emerging across industries. Companies ranging from railroad giant CSX to Google parent Alphabet GOOGL 2.87%increase; green up pointing triangle have told investors in recent days that they plan to hire to meet growth goals or to seize on emerging technologies.

The push to expand head count, at least modestly, is a reversal from the prevailing corporate messaging during much of the AI era. Major employers largely held back on adding people due to economic uncertainties or a belief that artificial intelligence could shoulder more tasks on the job. But some executives say the costs and limitations of AI now demand that more people be added; others want to hire people back following layoffs.

“We actually need to accelerate hiring a bit. We’re a little bit behind right now,” Booz Allen Hamilton’s Chief Operating Officer Kristine Martin Anderson told investors Friday. “We’re addressing that now.”
