Out of curiosity, I screened for winsori* in the full texts of articles (1990-2025) from the top 5 econ, top 3 finance, and top 3 accounting journals: * 3% in econ * 16% in finance * 27% in accounting (30% if I also include CAR and RAST) It's not entirely comparing apples with apples, but still.

In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵
The average CD_5 index per year for Web of Science. The original Park et al. decline (top curve) becomes essentially flat (bottom curve) when removing papers with CD_5=1. Those papers largely correspond to dataset artefacts.

I'm sympathetic to the 'why should we care' stance; it's outcomes [models, theories,...] we care about, after all, no? At the same time, yes, science is for humans, and we could get to a point where AI produces outcomes that are "true" but unhelpful (e.g., unintelligible to any human).

It's interesting how quick we are to assume science is aligned by default. There's an idea that good science doesn't require human involvement, it's about the "Truth" which can be discovered & verified independent of our judgment. In doing so we ignore most of the history of science.

New preprint! So, what's a multiverse analysis good for anyway?> With @jessicahullman.bsky.social and @statmodeling.bsky.social juliarohrer.com/wp-content/u...
What’s a multiverse good for anyway?

Julia M. Rohrer, Jessica Hullman, and Andrew Gelman

Multiverse analysis has become a fairly popular approach, as indicated by the present special issue on the matter. Here, we take one step back and ask why one would conduct a multiverse analysis in the first place. We discuss various ways in which a multiverse may be employed – as a tool for reflection and critique, as a persuasive tool, as a serious inferential tool – as well as potential problems that arise depending on the specific purpose. For example, it fails as a persuasive tool when researchers disagree about which variations should be included in the analysis, and it fails as a serious inferential tool when the included analyses do not target a coherent estimand. Then, we take yet another step back and ask what the multiverse discourse has been good for and whether any broader lessons can be drawn. Ultimately, we conclude that the multiverse does remain a valuable tool; however, we urge against taking it too seriously.

I think Colin is 100% right here. Obviously, fake data, fake citations, etc. are a problem, but I see no reason why they'd be more problematic if authors used AI. Not only does that seem the only workable stance, I also think it's the only principled stance that makes sense.

Interesting paper on peer review bsky.app/profile/last... I think a variation is possible where a journal would actually experiment with such an approach to decide whether to publish a paper or not. Focus is only on evaluation then but can be combined with improvement if we want that.

I think many of the many-analyst studies are rightly critisized for design issues - notably, participants lacking required domain knowlegde. However, I don't think that's all there is to it. I think much of the observed variability is also due to a lack of precise theory and measurement.
