New #paleoart for #FossilFriday: BRONTOSMASH! II: the BRONTOSMASHENING. High-resolution version just posted to #Patreon, along with lots of discussion about the apatosaur neck combat hypothesis: www.patreon.com/posts/120678... #sciart #palaeontology #fossils #dinosaur
Two long-necked, long-tailed dinosaurs engaged in pushing and shoving matches, their necks entwined. They are mostly in blue shadow but their necks and heads have emerged into the golden light of the rising sun. They are in a parched, dry environment with only the only landscape features being distant mountains, over which the first rays of yellow dawn sunlight are just visible.

Starting chronologically we got Benggwigwishingasuchus from the Anisian of Nevada. A basal poposauroid, this animal was found in sediments suggesting it was deposited far out at sea, yet it has no obvious adaptations for marine life. Artwork by @joschuaknuppe.bsky.social 2/16
An Epoidesuchus climbing atop the skull of the giant ichthyosaur cymbospondylus. It has long limbs, a long neck and a narrow head, looking unlike any modern crocodile. The skull of the ichthyosaur is halfway burried in a sand dune and plants cover most the ground around it. Lichen appear to grow on the skull, creating orange patches of discoloration.

Another orientalosuchin pretty much done. Last time I had Dongnanosuchus, this time its Jiangxisuchus from the Cretaceous fo China. The stratigraphy has been kind of a headache ngl but the skull, ignoring some crushing, was wonderfully complete. #sciart #crocodilia #jiangxisuchus #croc
Jiangxisuchus nankangensis compared in size to Steve Irwin. It has four short legs and a long tail and measures around 1.4 to 1.5 meter in length. A map shows were the fossil was found in south eastern china and text gives information to the origins (Nanxiong/Hekou Formation, which corresponds to the Maastrichtian) and its phylogeny (Orientalosuchina, possibly within Alligatoroidea)A skull reconstruction of Jiangxisuchus. It had large eyes and a medium-broad rounded snout. Overall the skull appears broadly triangular. Small bones are located above the eyesockets.
