Surveys show that at least where I live, the 21st century has seen people shift their values from prioritizing their own needs towards prioritizing the needs of others.

Yes, and I believe the implementation comes from splines2::iSpline().

I mean, many systems make it mandatory to fill in something, but I usually just tap a random radio button and write as my first comment to the editor that they should disregard that recommendation and decide for themselves what my review suggests the decision should be in their journal.

Right, that makes sense. And I guess for small households it's probably also more energy-efficient than a regular oven.

Ditto, also for the reject/major revision/minor revision/accept scale. Most journals aren't PLoS One and have other publication criteria besides technical correctness for publication. It's the editor's task to reconcile those with the reviewer's assessment of the work's strengths and weaknesses

I've always wondered why some people are really into air fryers. Aren't they just small convection ovens?

My girlfriend asked me to put more effort into splitting our vacuuming workload more evenly, so naturally I just ordered a robot vacuum.

I think what most annoys me is service providers trying to build features into email that only work within their walled garden. We already have teams and what not for that.

Especially if you regularly interact with people from outside your workplace. Then they become emails again. "Person X reacted to this message with a 👍"

In the hierarchy of methods to deal with missing data, "look harder" should always be #1.

This is absolutely insane. Don't pay for-profit publishers APCs. Don't let your collaborators do it either. Post preprints of your work, post your work on pubmed central, but for fucks sake stop sending hard-earned grant dollars to these publishing conglomerates

So if 40/42 studies in the meta are cross-sectional, it’s very reasonable to alternatively conclude that people who have more attention and self-regulation problems are more likely to be drawn to scrolling TikToks

$3.7 billion spent on APCs in 2025. That's ~1000X more than it costs to run bioRxiv/medRxiv. Worth thinking about as we consider how to fund infrastructure... arxiv.org/pdf/2608.16322

Often that's hard, and there are no solid guidelines. But feature creep is definitely a thing in model development, and generally I believe the most efficient way to fight it is to have clear stopping criteria.

Konsta Happonen @konsta.happonen.eu · 26/08/2026
It's a nice text, and I'm sure anyone with any experience in applied modelling would concur. In addition to having huge teams, I think one important solution is to have a clear definition of what constitutes a good-enough model before the work even starts.

It's not a defense, but I keep mixing people's names in real life as well :D To the degree that even when I've known someone for a very long time, I sometimes avoid saying their name out loud just because I fear it might be the wrong one.

I'm unironically in favor of changing the required format of publications from Word documents and pdfs to plain text files.
An R session generating an ASCII line chart showing agreement with ASCII science being a good idea rising quickly to 100 %.

Code:
library(asciichartr)
percent_agree_ascii_science_good_idea <- c(0,1-1/seq(2,60,2))*100
cat(asciiPlot(percent_agree_ascii_science_good_idea,cfg = list(min = 0, max = 100, height=10)))

But we also know these types of timelines can lead to more compulsive scrolling and feelings of regret over wasted time. What people do and what they actually want to do are not always the same thing.

Yes! An example: a representative of a large social media corporation once criticized people who vocally demand chronological timelines, saying that "revealed preferences" prove that algorithmic infinite timelines are what people want.

The title is a little pointed, but I am very serious here. Academics, medical researchers, and other organisations should not collect data on birth sex. It is rarely relevant, and it almost always leads to privacy violations for transgender people. Please share. I would like people to read this one.
