TUNE IN TOMORROW EVENING to see Guy Burley face down the eldritch horrors that run the DDoC!

“No,” he said, hearing how exhausted he sounded. “I can handle it.” And he could. He just wouldn’t like it. The Delaware Division of Corporations wasn’t the kind of place a smart man walked into without preparation. But he needed names to get started, so he’d have to go and find them.

He shook the papers out of it while Velvet counted out twenties. He shook the papers out of it while Velvet counted out twenties. Then he swore under his breath. The dang outfit was incorporated in Delaware, of all places. “Is there a problem?” his new client asked.

Guy sighed. “Three hundred dollars.” “Oh. I’ve got that.” She rooted around in a tote bag that Guy hadn’t even noticed, what with the living puppet in his office thing. It was a souvenir from the MFA. First she handed over a letter-sized manila envelope.

“Prove that I have a place in the field! Radio culture means so much to me. We can learn so much from it, get so much done. It’s the future, Mr. Burley.” “Okay, I get it,” Guy said. “I’ll need three bills to start. And some info on this AoRR outfit.” “Bills?”

Dr. Kristen "NO KINGS" Keegan @knkeegan.bsky.social · 7h
“I understand,” she said. “My father says, though, that the AoRR is actually *run* by artificial people.” “Yeah?” “Yes. What I want you to do, Mr. Burley, is prove it. Prove their hypocrisy.” Velvet warmed up to the subject, her eyes starting to glow with passion. Literally.

“Okay,” Guy said. “But that sounds like a shyster problem, not a gumshoe problem.” She paused long enough for him to decide that maybe more whiskey was not a good idea when his night had already gotten so screwy.

Guy nodded. Radio was big these days, and eggheads always wanted to analyze stuff instead of just, say, listen to music. “I really want to join the conversation,” Velvet said. “I just have some questions I want to ask. But they said no. Because artificial people aren’t allowed.”
100
Dr. Kristen "NO KINGS" Keegan @knkeegan.bsky.social · 8h
That gave Guy enough time to wonder where her voice was actually coming from. A hidden speaker, no doubt. Maybe under the hat? She went on, “The AoRR turned down my request to join their mailing list. That’s the Association of Radio Researchers.”

She undulated to the visitor’s chair, every movement looking like those joints might start their own chorus line. When she settled, though, everything locked in place and her eyes fixed on him. “My name is Velvet. Velvet Vale.” Where a human might take a deep breath, she just paused.

Her voice was weird, almost as soft and supple as Grace Kelly’s, but a little too high. Like a record played a touch too fast. Guy breathed out whisky fumes and shrugged. “Have a seat and tell me about it, then.”

Dr. Kristen "NO KINGS" Keegan @knkeegan.bsky.social · 8h
“Can I help you, d – dear?” he said, somehow only faltering a little bit over whether calling a puppet “doll” would be an insult. He covered up the moment of actual thought with another sip of whiskey. “You’ll have to tell me, Mr. Burley.”

Yokay I've quit work for the day (self-employment ftw), got a glass of wine, and randomly decided to continue this. Excelsior!

The girl clattered in on a gust of ozone. High heels, short skirt, cute hat, and a lot of questions in between. Her knees and elbows had too much give, and her purple eyes were way oversized. Guy reminded himself: If the check doesn't bounce, even a living puppet is a client.

Yeah I did that too. Now the problem is convincing myself I have time for fiction writing and shifting my butt from one chair to the other. Sigh. (Doesn't help that work actually makes me money, unlike fiction writing.)

I swear to you that in 1775, Isaac and Ruth Wedg named their newborn son Orronge. It's right here in the record.

Thank you for saying this. It's made me realize that one thing holding me back is that I've done so much work where the objective is clear and the first draft is the only draft. Exploring ideas without a clear path? In nonfiction? Radical. 😊

My favorite part of the Astarion Book Discourse is I don't know the game or the character, so I can read about it as if it's all one of those Greek plays that's obviously ragging on *someone* but I don't know who, or even why it's supposed to be funny/insulting/political, so it's just a tennis game.

I was reading through my "Poetry to Keep" document & ran across this one.
In Those Years by Adrienne Rich

In those years, people will say, we lost track
of the meaning of *we*, of *you*
we found ourselves
reduced to *I*
and the whole thing became
silly, ironic, terrible:
we were trying to live a personal life
and yes, that was the only life
we could bear witness to

But the great dark birds of history screamed and plunged
into our personal weather
They were headed somewhere else but their beaks and pinions drove
along the shore, through the rags of fog
where we stood, saying *I*

I don't think I know anybody in Seattle, tea drinkers or no, but I can definitely recommend the tea. My orders have to travel over 3,000 miles to reach me so the shipping expense problem is going to bite for sure. Still, there's nothing quite like the varie-tea they have. 😊

That happens when the roots of a tradition extend back to classical antiquity, which ended in the 400s CE. Many ideas from back then have been abandoned or changed, for very good reasons. That's called "progress." /

The U.S. founders inherited the liberal arts education tradition of western Europe. The one these bozos would like to see flattened into a caricature of the real thing. Not that the real thing wasn't problematic in a lot of ways before the late 20th century! But it was a start.

This really made something click for me. Found this extremely insightful on why liberal societies - which want to be the freest societies - struggle so much with freedom restrictions. (Translation in Alt)

What actually bothers people is a symptom of any liberal society. It liberates its citizens and then restricts them once more.
A woman born into an ultra-conservative family that envisages only the role of mother for women is protected by liberal society and can instead lead a childless life in a lesbian relationship with a Muslim woman in Berlin-Mitte. Liberal society is constantly on the lookout for people who have not yet been able to realise their full potential because the traditions, customs and morals of their social milieu prevent them from doing so. Anyone who says that something is improper, contradicts a divine plan or is contrary to public decency will find a reliable opponent in liberalism. Liberalism does not condone everything, but it permits whatever does not restrict the freedoms of others.
In this movement, liberal society challenges all communities that provide a sense of purpose. Parents no longer have as much say over what their children should do, and the churches should not dictate how long a marriage must last or what a woman does with her body. And just because things used to be done the way tradition dictated, nobody has to do them that way today. This devaluation of old institutions does not mean that the liberal state wants no churches, no families, no traditions. It merely curtails their authority. It gives them less weight. What is truly permitted and what is not is to be determined solely by the state through its laws, and not by a normative milieu. The motto is: anything that is not forbidden is permitted.
In this way, even what is good is lost. A vulgar, boorish man who, in the past, would not have dared to describe a sexual fantasy to a female politician for fear of social censure from his family and colleagues, can today feel free to do whatever he pleases. The only authority that can legitimately stop him is the law. So he need only ask whether it is forbidden and how he must phrase it so that it is sufficiently ambiguous to still be covered by freedom of expression. And if he manages to string together a series of ambiguities that make his intention obvious but do not constitute a criminal offence, he presents the liberal state with a major problem: the state cannot ban what is simply naughty, tasteless and repulsive.
This creates a vacuum. Much of what was previously curbed through dialogue, social respect, parental discipline, upbringing and moral authority is now left unregulated. Yet there is an urgent need amongst citizens for immoral behaviour to continue to be curbed. So the liberal state is called upon. It is expected to sanction thoughtless words, inappropriate physical contact, prejudiced speech, reckless driving, unbridled consumption, unhealthy eating and the infliction of discomfort. This blurs the distinction between legality and morality.

Part of the post-Trump repairs to democracy must be inspectors general. What if we house them in the legislative branch, where a president cannot fire them? Courts could serve as a check.

Line chart showing the number of smallpox deaths (y axis) in Massachusetts by month from 1872-1873 (x axis). It shows exponential growth from 25 in August 1872 to over 325 in December and January, followed by a precipitous drop in February and March as containment measures took effect.
