Seriously. It’s actually good quality stuff. My shirts have held up well through about 100 loads in my strangely violent washer, and the mugs don’t stain, crack in the washer or have the designs wear off (and I am not kind to my mugs). Check it out.

That all said, the idea that you get autonomous hacking computers is not entirely frivolous, but it doesn't look like Anthropic or OpenAI models somehow "escaping" onto regular computers and running there. The risk isn't zero because there are other more realistic ways you could get there

This is a good example of how you need quite a lot of detail of how these systems *actually* work to understand what the risks are, and how over-indexing on sci-fi can lead you a bit astray on what the future looks like

The NYT lost the Pulitzer for their transphobic podcast series with Azeen Ghorayshi to Pablo Torre and his reporting on the Clippers. They're salty about it so of course they're not going to properly credit him.
Screenshot of an X (Twitter) post by journalist Julie K. Brown (@jkbjournalist) criticizing coverage by The New York Times and The Athletic.
The post text reads:
"It is shameful that @nytimes @TheAthletic buried the fact that the biggest punishment in NBA history was the result of an investigation by journalist @PabloTorre. And to call it the result of a 'podcast episode' is a further slap in the face. He won a Pulitzer for this story and they call it an 'episode' instead of, at the outset -- crediting him with exposing this scandal. Really really lame."

It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."

Your weekly reminder that there are over 31 million people in Texas. In 2024, 6.3 million of them voted for Trump. 1 in 5 people in Texas voted for Trump, but so many of you spend a weird amount of time fantasizing about punishing the other 4 for it.
a screencap of someone who joined in Nov 2024 posting a headline that says "Texas Republicans endorse legislation to allow vote on secession from US" and above it he has written "Let's do it. Fuck 'em. We can build a wall. Remove all mlitary bases. Sever all rail, road and air traffic. Forbid them from using the dollar. No FEMA, Social Security or Welfare money. Cancel all passports held by Texans. Withdraw US citizenship from all Texan insurrectionists.
