AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

New in @towcenter.bsky.social's Deals & Disputes Tracker: 💻 OpenAI & WAN-IFRA partner to provide AI support to Ukrainian media via AIRPPU ⚖️ Seattle Times & Newsday (which prev. got 💰 from OpenAI & Microsoft) sue OpenAI & Microsoft 💻 OpenAI & Ringier launch collab tow.cjr.org/ai-deals-law...
Screenshot of the Tow Center's Deals and Disputes Tracker

Reported Details: OpenAI, WAN-IFRA and AIRPPU develop a new initiative supporting AIRPPU-selected news organizations in developing and implementing AI-driven newsroom, commercial and operational transformation projects. The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series will bring together international experts and practitioners to share practical knowledge, case studies and implementation strategies, while the Newsroom AI Catalyst will provide hands-on support to 10 participating Ukrainian news organizations. All participating organizations will also receive OpenAI API credits "to facilitate the development of bespoke newsroom solutions."Screenshot of the Tow Center's Deals and Disputes Tracker

Reported Details: The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleges the AI companies scraped the publishers' content and used it to train LLMs, which can reproduce passages from their reporting and provide outputs that reduce the need to visit their websites or buy subscriptions. It also alleges the AI companies diluted the publishers' trademark by generating outputs that falsely attributed fabricated content to the outlets. The publishers seek an unspecified amount of damages and the "impoundment and/or destruction" of data sets and AI models that include their works. Microsoft Philanthropies underwrites some Seattle Times journalism projects, and the both the Times and Newsday have previously received funding from the Lenfest Institute for Journalism's AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program (which was funded by Microsoft and OpenAI) for hiring a two-year AI fellow.Screenshot of the Tow Center's Deals and Disputes Tracker

Reported Details: The collaboration enables Ringier to secure "long-term, secure, and cost-effective access to OpenAI’s language models and tools." The publisher's individual business units will decide independently where and how to deploy the AI company's produces and services. The collaboration includes "[g]radual rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise across the Ringier Group, supported by OpenAI and the joint development of specific use cases." Financial terms are not disclosed, and the agreement does not include content licensing.

If you post survey data, news articles, etc. without a link back to the source whenever possible, you are weakening the informational chain of custody and making it harder for other people to confirm that they're seeing accurate information. This holds even if you're mad at whatever it is.

AI companies - ‘helping’ journalism…. by borrowing authority without bothering to fix citation . Me in CJR www.cjr.org/tow_center/d...
At the heart of this problem lies the original sin of the relationship between platforms and publishers. The haste of publishers to think that, when a technology company presents itself as providing "help" to journalism, this is in fact what it is doing. In nearly every example I can think of, the opposite has been the case. While executives paid far more than editors lectured newsrooms about trust being the "number one problem" for journalism, and shoveled money into underwriting research that
"proved" this, their own aim was to borrow the authority of reporting without paying for it, and to create products that washed away the foundations of fact in a tide of cash.
