It's official: The CTrain free fare zone has survived—for now. City council votes 9 - 6 to defer a decision on it until early 2027 when Calgary Transit comes back with a larger fare strategy. (Voting no to this was to keep the zone without the later review.) #yyccc

On eliminating CTrain free fare zone: Council approves Cllr. Yule amendment to defer decision to early 2027, when Calgary Transit is bringing an updated fare strategy to council. Item is thus amended 8-7. Still awaiting vote. #yyccc

After I send out the Sprawl newsletter I like to go for a long walk with the dog. On that walk it occurs to me sometimes that I have left out important info. And I think: I better add that in! Just added this graf to my piece on the CTrain free fare zone. The extended edition! #yyccc

Calgary city council's infrastructure committee just voted 7 - 4 in favour of eliminating the CTrain free fare zone. It will now go to council later this month for a final decision. If approved by council, the free fare zone would be eliminated August 1. #yyccc

One of my very first assignments as a journalist, in 2004, was to cover a Stephen Lewis speech in Calgary for the Mount Royal College student paper. Can remember being deeply inspired that day. A truly great man and a great Canadian.

These slop accounts are garbage. City council did NOT extend transfer window. They asked admin to start work on it + report back in Apr for council to decide. Accounts like these scrape headlines, have 100,000+ followers & often get it wrong. Meanwhile legit news orgs are banned by Meta. 🤦🏻‍♂️ #yyccc

Had a dream last night that I took out The Sprawl's Pop-Up Press. Twas a nightmare. Part of the front wheel fell off. I took it into a downtown building (why? dunno) and got stuck in there—couldn't get out. Then woke up. The Pop-Up Press is in hibernation for the winter but will return in spring!

It took me eight years. But I finally got a cable that lets me plug into the live #yyccc audio feed at city hall rather than using the web feed (which is delayed by some 30 seconds—drives me nuts when I'm watching council in person). Also repurposed an old speaker. Sweet setup over here!

Day 5 of budget at Calgary city council and the topic is TRANSIT. Budget includes $14M boost for more frequent service but it's only for primary transit network - aka fast and frequent routes - not base service. Lots of questions from councillors about that. #yyccc
