my "brashley" persona has awoken from the grave to say: this is such a quintessential example of the type of oversimplification of technology management within the archives sector that exploits, burns out our very best. The mental load required vs time allotted (& presumably v low pay) is astounding

When Turnitin says they do not train "Generative" AI models with student data, they are not saying they do not train AI models (such as classifiers) with student data. I'd like them to explain how students going back to the late 1990s consented to AI training on their copyrighted work.

That *I* make no distinction between theory and practice is because, in my experience, there is no difference between theory and practice. The whole is what I'm interested in, and *how* that relates to theory and practice is again part of the whole.

In other news, it is wild that it is this warm in October. See also: we need 120% of average rain for seven consecutive months to get out of drought... well that didn't happen last month. So...

But all of this occurs through active participation, not coercion through mandates, policies, and so forth. Such passive massifying of engagement with what we refer to as "open access" nullifies it to a static "thing", even though it has never been hegemonic or fixed, even from its coinage.

Experimenting with digital, online publishing has consistently been far more of plastic enterprise; giving forms, taking forms, and destroying forms. The processes of recursive questioning *enable* a plurality of forms and mobilise experimentation.

I've been reviewing old OA lore, and it is very frustrating that there has been a through-line of failure with regards to recognising OA as more of question (or series of questions) rather than an answer.

Interesting to hear from colleagues, peers, & friends on the recent OA Tage event in Linz. I am pleased that terms like "Capitalist Academia" are starting to become part of the discourse, particularly because of the plurality of politics of all things open; we have a lot to think through and do!

I am broke, but I still clear invoices within 12 hours (with a tip.) Labour sucks, and we are worth more than it. But I respect it. I know nobody has any time for my insights, and to be fair, I agree. I am awful. I do my best to not be the worst version of myself. That's all we can do, right?

I have had enough of a day to say, quite earnestly, that I want to decapitate the world. I'm just not sure where the neck of it is. Then there's the industrial and technological problems. But I am done with this whole malarkey. The torture has been going on for too long.

Trying to rescue the battery by isolating it and letting it charge independently. I know it is a lost cause, though. (They just didn't have any starter batteries in at the chandlery.) On the plus side, I'll have to get my engineer back out to sort it (I could domit myself, but he's lovely.)
001
Kevin Sanders @kjsanders.eurosky.social · 29/09/2026
Well, worked around that. See if I can save the battery before rushing to buy a new one. It has its own solar, and shouldn't have issues, but such is my luck... engine ran well. Time to get the old oil out...

There is so much great work on affect and relationality in (OA) publishing, and yet the policy landscape has a habit of echoing all the problems with legacy/commercial publishing's dynamics. Somewhat frustrating. Although one could argue that the purpose of policy is a form of political continuity.

The tone of the article is all off (as usual.) Positioning striking workers against students is a means of obfuscating the shared frustrations with the employer and institution.

"They then often had 2–3 days — and in some cases just 24 hours — to assess a manuscript and submit their report to the platform. Most interviewees reported receiving payments of €30–40 (around US$35–45) per review." This right here is why peer review micropayments are a bad idea.
