Westminster scrambled to memory hole covid. There's something at the core of reactionary politics that's instinctually dismissive of illness and the debilitating effect it has on people's ability to work. It aligns perfectly with reactionary ideas of self-reliance, freedom and austerity.

The nurdles on our Tyneside coast are back with a vengeance today, both depressing in and of itself but also a clear indication of what will happen periodically over the coming months and years and tides and winds bring some of the many millions of plastic pellets still swirling around in our seas.
Thousands of white nurdles (plastic pellets) strewn across Whitley Bay beach, amidst seaweed and sand. Thousands of white nurdles (plastic pellets) strewn across North Shields Fish Quay beach, amidst seaweed and sand. Also, I can't help but thinking about how the proliferation of 'useless eaters' after the Spanish Flu and WW1 pushed Europe towards exterminationism, and how that's mirrored in COVID leaving many people disabled so they are being 'exterminated' legally, with their disability being denied.

These cuts disproportionately target the arts & humanities: the Business School loses only three courses; the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures loses 48 – many of these are joint degrees, removing the optional breadth of study which has always been one of the appeals of a Scottish degree

Why the artist must take sides @saulwilliams.bsky.social
“Some artists believe they have no place discussing politics, or, at least, politics beyond their scope.

Yet a live-streamed genocide should bring everything into question. A question that becomes: What role can you play? What is within your power to help bring it to an end?”
