The Tom Phillips doco is flawed journalism for many reasons but everyone keeps failing to mention the main issue: the permanent suppressions mean we will never be able to tell the full, actual story (particularly about the involvement of the Family Court) and therefore what’s the point?

Key point ⬆️. Discarding the waste heat of geothermal per MBIE, our energy is 70% fossil and has been for decades. (Fossil has gone down, but so has biomass – I think due to decline in the pulp & paper industry). The action in ERP1 to target 50% renewable by 2035 (ambitious, but doable): canned.

I used to work at the UN for the disaster risk reduction, the champions of these prevention efforts were the storm and cyclone battered Southeast Asian and Carribean states in the peak climate-change zone who had learned the hard way. It’s FAFO time for NZ.

What would it take to meet the NDC domestically? Emissions would need to fall 12% every year to 2030 – more than twice the one-off Covid-19 dip, about equal to the one-off GFC decline. So... five GFCs' worth of emissions cutting. By 2030, NZ would need net zero CO2 and ~30% decline in methane.
