Yes, thank you! In 10+ years without a car, I have never once felt endangered by a rude or negligent cyclist as a pedestrian, but I have absolutely been endangered by them as a fellow cyclist.

Obviously no one else doing that hobby is at fault in that case, but if they wanted to encourage me to give it another try I would still feel like the onus is on them to convince me that guy wouldn't be a problem anymore. (This still has NOTHING to do with traffic laws, though!!)

I don't think this is unique to cycling. It's sadly easy for a tiny minority of dicks to be loud & obnoxious enough to taint a whole subculture. A couple of times I've dropped an entire hobby because of just *one* insufferably terrible person who showed up to every possible meetup in the city.

People with glasses and contacts have to realize that we have a disability that just happens to be highly accommodated for in modern society and that accommodation is the only reason why poor eyesight is not considered a disability.

On Instagram, I think it's just that the Hot Person subgroup of any category will inevitably rise to the top of that category. Like, a lot of the most popular professional *photographers* on Instagram are hot, even though they don't need to be since they mostly post pictures of other hot people.

This tracks with what my last two docs have told me. This was actually a harder adjustment for me than coffee, I love having a glass of juice in the morning and the vast majority of fruit juice on the market in the US is fortified with vitamin C.

I did at least get to see him in concert in Detroit in 2000, and gave him a moment of apparent joy & relief after he had signed about 50 copies of The Mummy and then this teenager (me) came up & asked him to sign the soundtrack to A Patch Of Blue.

Only caveat is THE SUBSTANCE was a British/French co-production, and the one major American studio that was tangentially involved—Universal, who owns Working Title—absolutely hated it and declined to distribute it. (That being said, THE ELEPHANT MAN also didn't start at a major studio.)

People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.
