gotta be honest, as someone who is constantly less aware and who has the memory of Dory from Finding Nemo, it's great until you can't remember whether or not you've turned off the oven (and you haven't used the oven since Tuesday)

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

normalize sending people who write dumb things in the New York Times critique of their bad takes
Dear Dr. Cruz,

I have read your opinion in the New York Times, and I am writing to you today to express that it was one of the most asinine things I have ever read. What is the point of educating students without them demonstrating the ability to craft arguments in text form, wherein one can edit oneself until one's most optimized argument is achieved? There is intention in wordcraft; there is motivation in the way that we communicate through text. Our individual voices come through in that which we write, and if we stop prioritizing writing in our pedagogy, we risk jeopardizing ourselves.

Socrates did not imagine the world in which we live, that in which writing has become increasingly standardized through AI. Even as I craft this email, Google is ardently suggesting that I change the way I have chosen to communicate with you. I'm not going to "simply the sentence" or "make concise," because doing so would undermine my point, which is that writing is a gateway to developing an aesthetic of communication.

When we describe media, we describe it as text. Film, video games, music, visual art, theatre, and every artform betwixt are evaluated and generated using the skills we develop through writing. I am a professional composer and music teacher, and to imagine that the ability to write is limited to prose (or verse, though I don't see you making that argument, thank God) is hugely fallacious. Do composers not write works of music? Do filmmakers not write scripts? How on Earth do you expect students to generate media without learning the craft of writing? Perhaps, as an apparent proponent of AI, you don't put much stock in human art and the reality that it is the result of human writing at all, which begs the question: why teach?

Sincerely, though only barely,

Kincaid Rabb

(I wrote much more, but went beyond the character limit for alt text. You get the idea.)

Fifteen years ago, in the classroom, wikipedia was annoying because it was hard to describe to kids who relied on it why it wasn't a good source to cite in a paper. Now, it's the final remaining example of citational responsibility any of them have ever seen.

The Democrats controlled the Congress for 70 years when they centered issues of the working class and were strongly backed by unions. Then in the 90s they decided to be moderate Republicans and have rarely controlled Congress since. "Normie" Democrats have led the party to ruin.

As long as you reduce the score to only the winds actually playing/merge parts when they play tutti, it's probably fine. (If you need an extra set of eyes, let Kevin and I know)

Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away at 71. He served for decades, spoke with great confidence, and leaves behind a record that will ensure historians never lack material.
