Ever since I first saw it, this scene has epitomised Amerlcan elegance for me. I wrote a short story about it for Radio 4 (never broadcast) and it's why I drink Gibsons even though nobody who works in a bar these days knows what they are. A perfect scene - RIP Eva Marie Saint.

Extraordinary quite how many homes this found its way into. My father became seriously ill the same month this came out, and so Everybody Hurts and Sweetness Follows are inextricably tangled up with that. The last three songs are about as good a final lap on any LP. Also: the fury of Ignoreland.

In a career highlight, many years ago, I had to sneak into a multi-storey car park behind The Dorchester on Park Lane to film one of Jeffrey Archers’ ex-mistresses as she showed me the parking spot where she once had sex with the great man. Never got a BAFTA for that one.

God bless Geoff Love (and his orchestra). My Dad had this album when I was a kid and I remember listening to it through his huge headphones whilst staring at the album cover. It was like peering into an alternate universe where everything was just a little bit wrong.

It will blow your mind. I had them recommended to me by Iain at work. I listened and assumed they were from the American Midwest. Then I saw a pic of them and one of the band was wearing a Roy’s of Wroxham T-Shirt. They are really good but no hint of if Narridge in the sound.

They are acquiring massive debt at exactly the wrong time, all in order to buy a business with big chunks in decline. I reckon they’ll be selling off bits of the company within a year as the savings they are assuming they’ll make will never compensate for the rising maintenance of the debt.
