For our January's good writing habits series we asked poets to share a top writing tip they've found useful. Today's tip is from Rachel Curzon, one of the poet contributors to the latest Winter 2025 issue of Poetry Review. Find details on the latest issue in the link in bio
Graphic saying 'January Writing Tip #1' in white on a green background, with the Poetry Society logo in white at the bottom. In a blue speech bubble, text reads 'The perfect circumstances for writing a poem don't exist. Do it anyway. And top yourself up with the good stuff in advance to make that snatched time productive.' Below text shows the poet's name in black: Rachel Curzon.

Modern Poetry in Translation @mptmagazine.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
‘And all of you, whole and immanent, maybe you are still worlds and you write by quill. I am almost, of the volcano’
Felícia Fuster, translated by @marialenacarr.bsky.social from #Catalan Read the full poem: modernpoetryintranslation.com/poem/and-more/
And more
II
And all of you are worlds.
I,
maybe just an ageing volcano
full of doubts. Maybe the crisscross,
                    aimless,
                    of a brush flying
                    over canvas.
                    Or nothing.

I don’t know what day it is, what space,
what system. I walk
with dazed bones and legs
wasted by the yellowing,
                    by the leaves
                    that think themselves birds,
                    and I don’t ask
for another sky.Though Felícia Fuster (Barcelona, 1921-Paris, 2012) is a poet of tangible objects (household, bodily, geological), her imagery flees from logic and her syntax contorts as it demands the reader’s close attention.

This is the second poem of ten within the third and last section (And more) of her book And Yet (I Encara, 1987). It begins with the word ‘and’, creating a conversational tone, further reinforced by addressing a plural you, which is a challenge in an English translation. The 66-year-old poet is defiant in the face of ageing, being silenced by adverbs, and having her memories shut away: she will keep walking, existing, writing, painting.

To translate this poem I tried to go beyond primary definitions to find the echoes of meaning. The central image, a ‘volcà antic’, is literally an ‘old volcano’, but what truly matters with volcanoes is their activity. Nevertheless, my first and final choice was ‘ageing’ because of references to time and physical decline. The rich options of ‘extinct’, ‘inactive’, or ‘dormant’ contradict her claim of an illicit explosion, even if she may (seem to) be reduced to smoke and steam.

Sight permeates the entire poem though most explicitly in the last stanza, where the calendar is ‘cec’, i.e., blind, but also clogged or blocked, and by eyes. Here I lose the word play in translation. Modigliani often painted eyes entirely in one colour. The poet’s eyes might ‘glaze over’, ‘be drowned’ or ‘heaped with salt’ but the poet will go on, even without stars for light.

At Modron we are glad to be part of the #SaveWelshMagazines campaign urging Creative Wales to increase funding for magazines in Wales. The situation at the moment is unsustainable, and the mags are vital to a healthy cultural life.
"Successively worsening grant levels and often more stringent funding conditions have become normalised, creating a precedent which has led to a race to the bottom in working conditions."

Magma grassroots.Worship

surely the people is grass - Isaiah 40:7

If we let it in—a green religion.
If a voice in the sky said:
This grass is your home, & we listened.
City of grass /grass as body; a hive mind connecting fields of possibility.
Grass as revolution,
as the answer to the question,
finding its voice; language of grass— grass-tongue. splitting
into endless variations:
soil-talk, root-talk, beetle-talk, & so on.
Grass song, its green hymn-a meadow, dancing.
Grass as memory / history / truth, swishing in the wind.
Unforgotten, or, perhaps, simply remembered.
